Chapter 5: Working Late

It was 11 PM. The Kane Enterprises building was empty.

Except for the 80th floor.

I was drowning in files. Victor said if I wanted to be his "Luna" I needed to know the business.

"You're not just arm candy," he said. "You're my partner for 6 months. Act like it."

So here I was. In an oversized blazer that smelled like him. Reading contracts.

The door opened. Victor. Tie loose. Sleeves rolled up. He looked... human.

"Still here?" he asked.

"You said to study," I replied. "So I'm studying."

He walked in and dropped a coffee on my desk. Black. No sugar.

"How did you know?" I asked.

"I pay attention," he said simply. Then he sat on the edge of my desk. Too close.

We worked in silence for an hour. The only sound was typing and the city outside.

Then my phone buzzed. Unknown number.

`You think you're safe with him? You're not. -D`

Damian.

My hand shook. Victor saw it.

"Who is it?" he asked.

"Nobody," I lied and put the phone down.

Victor grabbed my wrist. Not hard. But firm. "Luna. Look at me."

I did.

"Clause 8 doesn't mean you can't talk to me," he said quietly. "If Damian is threatening you, I need to know."

"He just texted," I whispered. "Said I'm not safe."

Victor's jaw tightened. His eyes went dark. "He's not touching you. Not while you're with me."

He stood up and took off his blazer. Put it around my shoulders.

"It's cold. And late. Let's go home."

On the elevator down, it was just us.

"Why are you helping me?" I asked. "Really?"

Victor sighed. "Because Damian was my best friend. Until he rejected you in public. That wasn't alpha. That was cowardice."

The doors opened to the garage. His driver was waiting.

In the car, Victor didn't let go of my hand.

"Sleep," he said. "I'll wake you when we get there."

I did. And when I woke up, my head was on his shoulder.

He didn't move me.

Maybe Clause 8 was going to be harder to follow than we thought.

Maybe business was turning into something else.

And maybe that was the most dangerous part.
