Nathan made it to the building where Louisa lived in record time, thanks mainly to the siren he had going the whole way there, and he arrived in time to see his friend being loaded into an ambulance. He threw open the door at his side and all but launched himself from the car on his way to the ambulance. “How bad is it?” he demanded of the paramedic who was in the process of securing Louisa for transport. He wasn’t able to see much of his friend with the paramedic fussing over her, but he could see enough to tell that someone had worked her over badly. She had a black eye, an obviously broken nose, her lip was split, and her cheek was a riot of colours.
