The bang from the basement made Autumn drop the mug she was holding. It shattered, but she barely noticed the mess. Her whole body had gone cold, frozen in place like her feet were nailed to the floor.
"Autumn?" Gabriel came around the corner quickly, his face full of concern. "What happened?"
"I heard something," she said, her voice shaking so bad she could barely get the words out. "From downstairs. A loud bang like something hit the wall."
He didn't even blink. "It’s the old pipes. This house is a hundred years old, sweetheart. It groans and bangs all the time. You’ll get used to it."
"It wasn't the pipes, Gabriel." She looked at him, searching his face for any crack, any sign that he was lying. She didn't find one. That was the scary part. He was too good at this.
