14 The Questioning After lunch, Brant snuck to the data center and put in a call to Knox. Knox listened to the entire story without a single interruption. When Brant finally finished, out of breath, Knox grunted. “Keep your calm,” Knox said. “After the arguing is over, you were protecting a student.” He paused, finding the accurate words. “I don’t want to say this last part, but there’s no way around it. Brant, if you ever need a job, you’ve always got one with me.” “Thanks,” Brant said. “But I seriously doubt you’ll need it,” Knox said, “assuming you can keep your cool. Call me when it’s all over.” Brant nodded and with a shaky hand ended the transmission. He taught another class, though Celeste did most of the teaching. Brant was a wreck. Then he went to the twenty-third floor. B
