CHAPTER ONE-THEALLY

553 Words
Victor Kane's office smelled like old books and expensive whiskey. Laura sat across from him in a velvet chair that was too soft — she kept sinking into it, feeling smaller than she wanted to feel. Victor smiled at her from behind his mahogany desk. He was handsome, silver-haired, with warm brown eyes and a voice that made you lean in. He looked like someone you could trust. "I heard about the eviction notice," he said. "I want to help." Laura's throat tightened. "Why?" "Because I knew your father. Samuel Carter was a good man. A visionary." Laura blinked. "You knew him?" "Briefly. We crossed paths years ago." Victor's eyes softened. "He spoke of you often. He was so proud of you." Something hot pressed behind Laura's eyes. She forced it down. "Thank you," she said. "That means a lot." Victor waved a hand. "I believe in what your father built. And I believe in you." Laura leaned forward. "Then you know about Hart Technologies. About the redevelopment project." "I know Jason Hart is trying to buy your property. I also know he's not going to stop." "Then what do I do?" Victor smiled — slow, warm, fatherly. "You don't fight him alone. You fight him with me." He slid a document across the desk. Laura read it — a partnership agreement. Victor Kane Investments would fund Legacy Hub, provide legal support, and help her fight the redevelopment project. "It's generous," she said. "Why are you doing this?" Victor leaned forward. His eyes met hers, and for a moment, she could have sworn she saw something flicker behind them. Something cold. But it was gone before she could name it. "Because I believe in protecting legacies," he said. "And because your father once did me a kindness I never repaid." Laura picked up the pen. "Thank you, Victor," she said. "You have no idea what this means to me." Victor smiled. "I think I do, Laura. I think I do." He watched her sign. His eyes never left her face. When she was done, he set the paper aside. "Now," he said, "tell me more about your father. Tell me about the café. Is there anything... unusual about the property? Anything hidden?" Laura hesitated. A warning bell rang in her mind — quiet, barely audible. But Victor was her ally. Her only hope. "There's a safe," she said. "Beneath the floorboards of his office. I don't know the combination." Victor's eyes gleamed. "A safe?" "I think he left something for me. I just don't know how to open it." Victor nodded slowly. "I know someone who can help. A locksmith. Discreet. Trustworthy." Laura smiled. "That would be amazing." Victor smiled back. "I'll arrange everything." She stood, shaking his hand. His grip was warm, firm, reassuring. "Thank you again," she said. Victor walked her to the door. "Be careful, Laura. Jason Hart is not a man who takes no for an answer." "I'm not afraid of him." Victor's smile didn't quite reach his eyes. "Maybe you should be." Laura walked out. She didn't look back. She didn't see Victor pick up his phone. She didn't hear him whisper into it: "It's real. The safe is real. She's leading me right to it." She didn't know she'd just handed her greatest secret to a predator.
