Chapter 3: The Queen's Warning

1181 Words
The sea was darker than usual that night, heavy with secrets. Every current whispered one name—Sirena. She drifted alone inside the crystal-blue prison that was once her home. The Queen’s spell still shimmered faintly around her tail, glowing whenever she tried to swim upward. The ocean felt colder now, and silence pressed against her heart. She touched her throat and remembered the Queen’s words: Speak to no human, sing no song. But her voice, her song, was her soul. And Adrian—her reason to sing—was far above, somewhere beyond reach. Sirena closed her eyes. The image of his smile warmed her in the darkness. “I will find a way,” she whispered. A faint ripple answered her—someone was near. From behind a coral arch came Miral, her sister, carrying a small orb of sea-light. “Sirena,” Miral said softly, “you shouldn’t be alone.” Sirena smiled sadly. “I’ve been alone since the Queen took him from me.” Miral floated closer. “You risk everything for a human who may already have forgotten you.” “He hasn’t,” Sirena said quickly. “I can feel him. His heart still calls mine.” Miral sighed, torn between envy and love. “The Queen watches every tide now. If she learns you still defy her, she’ll silence you forever.” “Then let her,” Sirena whispered. “Love is worth the silence.” Miral touched her hand gently. “You speak like a dreamer.” “Dreams are all I have left,” Sirena replied, her voice trembling. Miral hesitated. “There might be one way…” Sirena turned sharply. “What way?” Miral looked around nervously. “Long ago, before the Queen ruled, there was a sea-witch who lived near the Black Trenches. She can break any curse—for a price.” Sirena’s eyes widened. “What kind of price?” “No one knows. Some say she takes memories, others say she takes years from your life.” Sirena looked toward the surface above, the light fading into darkness. “I would give anything to see him again.” Miral grasped her hand tighter. “Then you are truly lost.” Before Sirena could answer, the water around them pulsed with power. A swirl of golden light filled the chamber, and suddenly the Queen’s voice echoed through every current. “Sirena of the Golden Hair!” They both froze. The Sea Queen appeared in a vision of light, towering and beautiful, her crown glimmering with pearls of fire. “I warned you once,” she thundered. “Yet I still sense your heart reaching toward the human world.” Sirena bowed her head. “Forgive me, my Queen.” The Queen’s eyes glowed brighter. “Forgiveness is not given to those who betray the ocean. Love for a human brings ruin to our kind.” “But why?” Sirena cried. “Why must love be forbidden?” The Queen’s gaze softened for a moment—only a moment. “Because I once loved a human too,” she said bitterly. “And his kind burned our shores. My heart turned to ice that day, and so shall yours if you continue this madness.” Sirena’s breath caught. “Then you know what it feels like.” “Yes,” the Queen whispered, her voice like breaking glass. “And that is why I cannot let it happen again.” With a sweep of her hand, the Queen sent a rush of magic swirling around Sirena. Pain flared in her chest. She gasped, clutching her heart. “From this moment,” said the Queen, “every tide will carry a warning. If you touch the shore again, the sea itself will drag you down.” The light vanished, and silence returned. Sirena trembled, tears sparkling like pearls around her face. Miral caught her in her arms. “Sister, you must stop this before it destroys you.” But Sirena’s eyes were distant. “It’s too late, Miral. Love already owns me.” Above the waves, Adrian stared out from the cliff’s edge, the wind whipping through his hair. For days he had searched the coast, calling her name. The villagers thought he’d lost his mind. “A mermaid?” they laughed. “You must have swallowed too much seawater, sailor.” But Adrian didn’t care. The sea had changed him. He could feel her in the pull of every wave, in the hush before dawn. He began carving small shells into shapes—hearts, stars, tiny symbols he’d seen glowing on her tail. He left them by the water’s edge every night, hoping she might see. One evening, as the sun bled into the ocean, a strange mist rolled in. The air grew thick with the scent of salt and magic. Then he heard it—a faint hum, like a heartbeat in the wind. “Sirena?” he whispered. A soft glow appeared beneath the water. The light moved closer, brighter. Adrian ran toward the shore. “Sirena!” But when the light broke the surface, it wasn’t her. A shadow rose—tall, dark, graceful. A different mermaid with eyes like storms. “Human,” she said coolly. “You call for one who is forbidden.” Adrian stepped back. “Who are you?” “My name doesn’t matter. What matters is this: the sea no longer welcomes you.” “Where is she?” he demanded. “Tell me!” “She is being punished for loving you,” the mermaid replied. “If you truly care for her, leave. Forget her.” Adrian’s heart pounded. “I can’t. I won’t.” The mermaid’s gaze softened for a moment. “Then you are braver than most. But bravery won’t save her. The Queen’s anger has no mercy.” Before he could speak again, she vanished beneath the waves. Adrian fell to his knees on the sand, the fading glow reflecting in his eyes. “If the Queen wants war,” he murmured, “then I’ll bring her one.” Beneath the sea, Sirena swam restlessly in her prison. The Queen’s warning echoed in her head, but her heart drowned it out. She found a shard of shell glimmering with moonlight and whispered into it, sending her voice upward through the currents. Her song drifted faintly to the surface—a call only one heart could hear. And far above, on the lonely shore, Adrian lifted his head as the wind carried a whisper of her melody. He smiled through his tears. “I hear you.” Somewhere deep in the dark sea, Sirena’s lips curved into a trembling smile. Two hearts, separated by worlds, still found each other in the music of love. But the Queen’s storm was only beginning. Watch out for Chapter 4: “The Sea Witch’s Bargain” — where Sirena risks everything for a forbidden spell, and love begins to cost more than either of them can bear.
