When I woke, my wrists were chained.
A woman stood before me.
Silver hair.
Silver eyes.
Black robes.
“I’m High Priestess Evelyne.”
“Where am I?”
“Somewhere safe.”
“I don’t feel safe.”
She smiled.
“You’re intelligent.”
“Where is my mother?”
“Alive.”
My heart jumped.
“Take me to her.”
“You aren’t ready.”
“I don’t care.”
“You should.”
She stepped closer.
“You are the key to the Lunar Throne.”
“I don’t want a throne.”
“You will.”
The door opened.
Kael entered.
My heart stopped.
“What are you doing here?”
His eyes moved to my chains.
“Release her.”
Evelyne laughed.
“You came for your rejected mate.”
Kael’s expression hardened.
“Don’t call her that.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
He looked at me.
“Because you’re still my mate.”
“Not according to you.”
His face fell.
Evelyne smiled.
“How touching.”
Kael moved toward me.
“I made a mistake.”
“You keep saying that.”
“I’ll spend the rest of my life proving it.”
I looked away.
“I don’t want your promises.”
Suddenly an explosion shook the building.
Kael grabbed my hand.
“Run!”
We escaped through underground tunnels.
Then the tunnel collapsed.
I screamed his name.
“Kael!”
Nothing.
I crawled through the darkness.
Then I heard a voice.
A woman’s voice.
Elara.
I froze.
“Mother?”
Follow the moon.
Silver light appeared ahead.
I followed it.
And found myself standing before a hidden doorway carved with the same symbol that marked my palm.
I touched it.
The door opened.
And my mother stood behind it.
