20 PARADISE ISLAND LATE AFTERNOON “Agent Conners has been gone a long time.” Esther peered at her husband through the dim shadows, and rose to pace back and forth across the hard-packed dirt floor. “You don’t think anything’s happened to her, do you?” Reuben sighed. He’d noticed the hazy sunlight was starting to fade, too. Sunset was probably still a good three or four hours away, but the sun was on the other side of the island. It would get dark here a lot sooner. His inner clock insisted they’d only been hiding in the catacombs for about an hour. But Esther was right. It did feel like they’d been trapped down here all day!
