As the opening remarks sounded throughout the room, I inconspicuously looked through the sea of faces for that couple. I just wanted to know where they were sitting. But the more I looked the less successful I was in my search for them.
“Looking for an exit?” Sean smiled at me. I chuckled at his response. I was glad he didn’t see my intended goal. He leaned close and whispered, “Don’t worry. Once the hospital administrator is done his speech, they’ll let the food out.”I whispered back my thanks as I forced my eyes back to the stage.
They are just a couple. Two beautiful people who happened to be together. You see them all the time on the TV and on the streets. They are nothing but regular people. You are benign weird Kimberly.
I breathed out as I tried to reason with myself. I was beginning to obsess over them. It’s not like I haven’t seen pretty people before. I don’t know why I’m doing this over them.
Instead, I focused on finding Tara. Knowing her she would probably be in the kitchens ensuring that the kitchen staff and meals were good to release. I swept my eyes around the room again. I saw the back of her as she rushed toward the bathroom. She had one hand placed on her stomach as she disappeared into the hidden hallway.
I knew a part of me should have told Sean but I didn’t want to cause him stress tonight. Tara was probably a mess and it would only stress her out more. Instead, I excused myself and walked quickly to the bathroom.
Once inside, I noticed Tara was coming out of a stall and rushed to the sink to rinse her mouth.
“Tara, are you okay?” I questioned as I began to get nervous.
“Kimmie? I think it’s the nerves. There are so many important people here. I think I’m having a panic attack.” She said as her face looked a bit pale and her eyes looked at the ground.
“Tara Lucas. Who are you to get panicked? You survived the MAson wedding. Remember Mikayla, the bridezilla? She complained about everything and then got so drunk that she burned her own gown. Did you panic? No. You handled everything like the boss you are. Hell, you even did a quick sewing session to make that b***h look presentable. If you can handle her then you can handle all of these rich snobs.” I said to Tara with as much conviction as I could muster. I could not let my friend feel nervous or jittery when this moment meant everything to her.
Her frown turned upside down as she shook her head. She chuckled, “Thanks. I guess even on your day off, I still need you.”
“No problem, boss.”
Tara straightened her gown as she pushed her shoulders back and raised her head. “Now if you excuse me,” She said with more confidence, “I have a ball to host.”
I laughed at her as she closed the door behind her. I turned to leave when another giggle sounded behind me. I looked back to see a different stall door open. My eyes froze as my skin grew warm.
It was her…the beautiful woman from earlier.
No, now that I was closer to her I realized that the word beautiful was not the best to describe her. She was exquisite. Almost as if she walked off of a vintage magazine cover and plopped right in front of me. Her blue eyes pierced mine as she flashed me a smile. I swear I felt my heart skip a beat.
“You must be the greatest friend I have ever heard. That speech was just heart-warming.” Her voice was slightly high-pitch but breathier. Similar to Marilyn Monroe. “I’m sorry to have eavesdropped but I was a bit moved at your words.”
“Oh! No, it’s okay.” I felt my heart beat faster as I replied to her.
She turned to wash her hands and I couldn’t help but study her further. The gown truly did cling to her form. She was slender with hips and a curvy waist. Even her backside had a nice shape.
What the hell? Am I checking out a woman?
I snapped my eyes away from her body as she turned off the tap to look at me. My face felt as though it was on fire. I was afraid she had caught me and would label me a creep. She didn’t say anything. Her smile grew wider as she extended her hand to me.
“I’m Ella,” She said in a sing-song tone.
I could feel my hand shake as I clumsily placed it in hers. She felt a little cold but at the same time, I felt small sparks erupt in my pores when we made contact. I had to swallow away the foreign feeling as I lifted my eyes to hers.
“M-my name is Kimberly,” I stammered, “But you can call me Kimmie.” I felt my voice become raspier the more I talked.
“Kimmie,” She repeated as her blue eyes went slightly darker. My heart pounded at the sound of my name rolling off her lips. She took a tiny step closer to me but it was enough to cause my stomach to clench in anticipation. “We should talk more tonight. I’m seated closer to the band. I’d love to get to know you more.”
“Yes.”
I realized I must have answered her a bit too eager, I felt my face warm. My reaction only caused her smile to deepen as she slowly released my hands. Almost as if her fingers were softly caressing mine. Once her hand had disappeared, I immediately missed her touch.
“See you later.” She winked at me as she sauntered toward the doors. Her hips swayed slightly. The action enticed my eyes to roam her figure again. My mouth felt dry as my fingers itched to grab her hips. I wanted to feel them beneath my palms.
As she disappeared behind the bathroom doors, the spell was broken. I suddenly remembered where I was. I snatched a paper towel and drowned it in water. I almost ripped the thin paper as I rang it out and placed it on my heated neck, mindful of my makeup.
Was I just lusting after a woman?
