Anna’s POV
Chapter 3: The Weight of the Moment
Axel is leaning against the brick wall, his arms crossed as usual, but there’s something about his posture tonight. He’s not relaxed. His jaw is tight, and his eyes keep flicking to me, like he’s waiting for something.
Isaac is standing a few steps to my left, his hands stuffed in his pockets, watching me carefully. There’s a softness in his expression now, something that wasn’t there earlier when he kissed me under the mistletoe. And then there’s Elias, the quiet one, standing a little behind the others, like he’s not sure if he should step in or stay back. His dark eyes are locked on me, but he doesn’t say a word. He doesn’t need to.
I look at them all, and my chest tightens.
I never asked for this. I didn’t ask for their attention, their kisses, or the way they seem to be tangled in my life, no matter how hard I try to push them away.
“I don’t know what’s happening,” I say quietly, my voice barely above a whisper, but somehow, they all hear me.
Isaac steps forward first, his expression serious. “You don’t have to know everything right away, Anna. Just… trust that we’re not trying to make things difficult. We just want to figure this out with you.”
“Figure what out?” I snap, spinning around to face him, the frustration bubbling up again. “You think you can just kiss me and everything’s going to magically fall into place? It doesn’t work like that.”
Axel chuckles darkly, pushing off the wall. “You’re taking this way too seriously, Anna. It was a kiss. That’s it. It doesn’t have to mean anything unless you want it to.”
I shake my head. “No. I don’t want it to mean anything.”
But even as I say it, I can’t help the way my pulse quickens. I can’t stop the thoughts that keep rushing back to the way their lips felt on mine, how each kiss seemed to burn me in a different way.
Elias finally speaks up, his voice calm and steady. “You don’t have to decide right now. But you should know that we’re not going anywhere. We want to be here for you, no matter what that means.”
I’m quiet for a long moment, taking in his words. They’re not rushing me, not pressuring me, but the weight of their attention makes it hard to breathe. It’s like being under a microscope. I never asked for any of this, yet here they are, pulling me in, whether I want it or not.
I turn away from them, looking out over the darkened parking lot, the Christmas lights in the distance blurring into a colorful haze. I want to escape. I want to run from all of this.
“You can’t just show up and kiss me, then expect things to go back to normal,” I say, my voice shaky now. “You can’t just be part of my life like that.”
“I know we can’t just be part of your life,” Isaac says, his voice soft, but firm. “But we want to be. We want to figure this out with you, step by step. If you’ll let us.”
I feel my breath catch. Let them in? I don’t even know what that means.
A quiet tension falls over us, and for a moment, no one speaks. The only sound is the hum of the Christmas lights in the distance and the soft rustle of the wind through the trees. I close my eyes, trying to steady myself.
I’m not ready for this. I’m not ready for them. I never asked for them to get involved in my life, but now they’re here. And somehow, I don’t know how to stop it.
“I’m not a game,” I mutter, still looking away. “This isn’t some… some fun thing for you guys to play around with. You’re all… brothers.”
Isaac steps closer, his voice gentle. “We’re not playing, Anna. We’re serious about this. We didn’t ask for it either, but now that we’re all here, we’re not going to just walk away.”
My heart skips a beat, and I feel my chest tighten. Serious? They’re serious about me?
“I don’t want this,” I say quietly, but my voice cracks on the last word, betraying the emotions I’m trying to suppress. “I don’t want any of this.”
There’s a long pause. I can feel the shift in the air, the quiet tension growing heavier. I’m not sure if I’m disappointed or relieved when Axel speaks up.
“Well, that’s a shame,” he says with a shrug, the playful tone gone from his voice. “Because we didn’t come here tonight to play games. We came here to make something real.”
I spin back around to face them. “You’re telling me that all this… the kisses, the attention, the way you’ve been acting like I’m the center of everything… is real?”
Axel smirks, the usual cockiness creeping back into his voice. “That’s exactly what I’m saying.”
I take a step back, not sure if I should laugh or scream. “I don’t even know you guys. How could you possibly think this is real?”
“We’ve been friends for years,” Elias says softly, his gaze steady. “We’ve seen you around. We’ve always admired you, Anna. But it’s more than that now.”
“I don’t want you to admire me,” I snap, crossing my arms defensively. “I don’t need your admiration. I don’t need any of this.”
Isaac steps forward again, his eyes serious now, his usual easy-going smile replaced with something more intense. “But we’re here. And we’re not going to back off. We care about you, Anna. And we want to see where this could go.”
His words hit me like a punch to the gut. Care about me? I don’t even know what that means. They’ve only known me for a few months, and suddenly, they want to make something out of… this?
I’m so lost in my thoughts that I don’t hear the footsteps behind me until they stop right next to me.
I turn, startled, and find Axel standing just inches away. He reaches out, his hand hovering for a second before he touches my arm gently. It’s such a simple touch, but it sends a shock of heat through me, like a spark igniting something deep inside.
“I don’t want to make you uncomfortable,” Axel says quietly, his voice low and serious now, “but I want you to know that we’re all in this together. You’re not alone in this, Anna.”
I can’t breathe. I’m drowning in the words, the closeness of him, the electricity in the air between us. I want to pull away, but I don’t. I can’t.
“I didn’t ask for any of this,” I whisper, my voice barely audible. “I didn’t want any of this.”
