Chapter Ten

1082 Words
(Lucian's POV) The car slipped out of my control as the truck bashed into us. Only one thing came to my mind. Eleanor. My eyes drifted to her slender figure pressed into the car seat. Her hands gripped the seatbelt tightly, her amber eyes widened with fear before squeezing shut in anticipation of the impact. My heart thumped loudly as fear gripped me. I wasn't about to lose her again, not now that I was barely getting her to trust me. “Stay with me Len,” my voice broke. And for the first time in a long while, I was scared and uncertain of an outcome. The impact drove us off the road and sent us spiraling straight into the pole beside the road. Pain buzzed through my head as pieces of glass flew around. I stared at the passenger’s seat. There she lay, curled up and barely unconscious. My body felt too numb to reach out. Then the black Maybach roared to life from the other end of the road. Seems it had waited to see if we'd make it out of the car. It sped down the empty road. The plate number caught my attention. It was all too familiar. Pain shot through me again, and as I drifted off into unconsciousness, my thoughts ran back to his words two yrs ago. ‘If you don't stay away from her, I will come for her’. (Eleanor's POV) The rhythmic beeping of a machine stirred me awake, the throbbing pain in my head intensified. I opened my eyes to the pearly white walls, the strong scent of disinfectant lingered in the air. My head felt heavier than usual, I lifted my hands to feel a thick gauze wrapped around my head. The beeping sound became faster. Then the room door burst open. “You're awake Ms.” A lady in white coat strolled in and smiled warmly at me. “How are you feeling,” she took out a pen from the breast pocket of her coat and began writing on the notepad in her hand. “I feel like a wreck,” I stretched out the words, my body aching in different directions as I tried to sit up. “That's expected, so far your body is recovering better than anticipated.” She came closer and adjusted the headboard for me. I leaned in and relaxed a bit. She stepped back. “You should be ready to go home in another 3 days,” she closed the pad in her hands. “Another what?..,” I blurted out, “How long have I been here for,” I spoke hurriedly. “It's been three days Ms.” She paused, “today making number four,” she concluded. The news caught me off guard. I had been unconscious for three whole days. What about Lucian?. What about Marcus?. The police too. Everything came rushing into my head at once, pain shot through my head again, making me wince. “Ma'am you'll need to relax, please,” the lady coaxed, she adjusted the drip and stared at me, her face softened at the questions in my eyes. “Your guardian will be here anytime soon,” she bowed and made for the door. “Wait.., my guardian?” “Yes, he stepped out a few minutes before you woke,” she took out the notepad again, “he said he was your…” her eyes scanned the page, “husband.” She stared at me for confirmation. I had no idea what to say. She closed the book again, bowed a second time and exited the room. My head spun, Marcus found me again. My insides tightened as fear crept in, I didn't know who to turn to again. Then my thoughts wandered to Lucian, he was in the crash too, was he okay?. The doors opened again. This time a familiar face stepped in, someone I wished I wouldn't see right now. “What are you doing here,” irritation dripped from my voice. “Who else were you expecting,” Marcus strolled in, a hand in his pocket, the other held a brown envelope. He placed the brown envelope on the bedside table. Then he poured me a glass of water. I sneered at the act, my face twisted from pain when I turned my head away from him. He set down the glass calmly. “I didn't mean for things to turn out this way,” he started. “Oh please…” I rolled my eyes at his words. He sighed softly. Realizing I wouldn't pay him any mind, he took the envelope from the bedside table and handed it to me. I grabbed it, my eyes narrowed in anticipation as I drew out the white paper. Shares transfer agreement was boldly written at the top. “What's this supposed to mean,” I stared at him like I was looking at my nemesis. “This is the only way to keep them safe,” he analyzed. “Keep them safe?..., from what” “With everything that's happening.., the board might choose to seize your shares,” he paused for a moment, “But if you hand them to me, I'll keep it safe, and when everything dies down you can get them back.” I chuckled dryly. So that was why he came, all for the shares. The only thing I had gotten when I got married to him, now he wanted it back. “And what makes you so sure the police will get to me,” “Don't be stubborn Ellie,” his voice rose a bit. “I'm doing this for your own good.” Just then the door opened, the same lady from before stepped in. She stopped in her tracks, her eyes running between Marcus and me, then she spoke to Marcus. “Who let you in sir?..” then she turned to me, “ do you know him Ms.” I stared skeptically at her. Had the stress from work finally gotten to her?. “What do you mean, you said he brought me in, remember?” “No Ms., your husband did.” “Her husband?” Marcus echoed, his eyes running towards me almost immediately, accusation plastered on his face. “That would be me..” a cold voice spoke from the door, all eyes snapped to the door at once. Ughh…, not him again, I groaned internally.
