Chapter Eight

(Eleanor's POV) I stared at her. My eyes flashing with fury. “It was you?,” She didn't look apologetic at all, instead she smiled wider. “Sarah what's going on,” Tiffany spoke to her, still taking her stance in front of me. “Step aside young Ms.” She twirled the gun again, “this has nothing to do with you”. I stepped out from behind Tiffany, my face now calm. I stared at the girl in front of me, she looked nothing like the nanny from minutes ago, her usual cheerful face replaced with a dangerous glint, her dress too expensive for a common nanny to acquire. “Why did you frame me,” the question rolled off my tongue. But instead of an answer, she clicked her tongue, taking another step towards us, “ you're in no place to ask questions,” she eyed me up and down. “You look better than the last time I saw you,” she mocked me. The last time she saw me?. My mind wandered to different possibilities, nothing seemed to make sense. “Now enough of the talking,” she raised the gun, “I have a job to finish—” “Wait..!” Tiffany shrieked, “The police are after her, do you want to make yourself the target” she tried bargaining. And for a second it seemed like it was working. Sarah took a look at me, her finger coming up to her chin as if she was contemplating. “Well then…” she c****d the gun, “Why don't I give them something to find,” her eyes lit up and without warning, she pulled the trigger. My eyes blurred, everywhere spun around me. I waited for the impact. A second passed, and then another. But there was nothing, then I looked up at her, my blood ran cold at the sight, the gun wasn't pointed at me, but beside me. “Tiffany!!” I screamed, my lungs tightening with every breath. I reached out just in time to catch her, crimson red ran all the way from her shoulder down. “Hey…, look at me, you'll be fine,” I tried to assure her but it was more to myself. She smiled faintly at me, the sight breaking me. “What a sad reunion,” Sarah's cold laugh interrupted us. I glanced up at her, my eyes glistening with unshed tears. How did it get here. Then she took one last look at us and slid into the car. The engine roared to life, the dust from the exhaust fumes trailing all the way behind, then the car disappeared into the shadows. I stared down at Tiffany in my arms, I tore off the hem of my dress and pressed it against the wound, the piece of clothing turning crimson almost immediately, tears pooled at the back of my eyes. I had no choice but to call the ambulance, even if it meant they would find me. I reached for my clutch, pulled out my phone and directly called the ambulance. “Stay with me Tiff,” my voice cracked, I pressed the piece of cloth harder against the wound, she winced at the pain, not saying a word. I blinked back the tears, silently murmuring a prayer. Just then another car pulled up in front of us, it wasn't an ambulance. “ Get in,” Marcus roared from the driver's seat. I didn't wait to be told twice, nor did I question how he found us. I pulled Tiffany up to her feet as I wrapped her uninjured arm around my shoulder for support. I guided her slowly into the car. Her eyes were beginning to drop by now, fear crept up inside me. Marcus sped down the road, he didn't ask what happened. His jaw tightly clenched together as he stared straight ahead. “Won't you ask what happened?,” I probed. “I have eyes.” His words sounded accusing, like he was blaming me for everything. I kept quiet, I wasn't in the mood to argue with him. The car came to a stop outside the hospital, a stretcher was already outside and ready, I half carried Tiffany onto the stretcher as other staff assisted me. Marcus stood by the side, his motive still unclear. I pulled my thoughts away from him and followed the stretcher in. I sat at the visitor’s seat outside the ward. My hands trembled as my thoughts ran around today's events. The police were still searching for me, it was only a matter of time before they'll find me. Just then a pair of shoes stood in front of me, I slowly trailed my eyes upward. Marcus stood there as his eyes raked all over me, the disgust clearly evident in his eyes. He didn't like what he saw, I wouldn't like myself in the same situation either. “What did you do to Stella?,” he said each word slowly, the blame in his words were too heavy to hide. I sighed softly. “You believe the news over me,” I shifted my eyes away from him. “You are always looking for ways to get back at her,” “Get back at her?,” my voice rose with each word “And what did she do that I'll want to get back at her for,” I held his eyes steadily, “ or rather what did you do?,” I searched his eyes for the slightest shift of emotions but he gave nothing away. “It's not me Ellie, the police have evidence,” he said softly, his sudden change in mood surprising me. His eyes looked everywhere but me, like he was hiding something. But before I could question him, the men that just stepped in caught my attention. They found me. Or rather, they knew I was here. My face shifted as I looked at Marcus, “You sold me off?” My mind went blank at the realization. That's how he found us earlier. He had been watching me all this time. “I'm sorry Ellie, this is for your own good” he rubbed the back of his neck, “I'll get you out I promise” “No…” my voice shook. The policeman stopped in front of me, the cuffs dangling between his fingers. “Ms Thornhill, you're under arrest for the attempted murder of Ms Stella Hayes and Ms Tiffany Alexander” “What??” Tiffany? My world blurred at the news. I had no evidence, everything was right in front of me, but Tiffany? How did they know about her. Then it clicked. Marcus. Rage surged through me. He set me up. “I'm supposed to be your wife Marcus.” I spat out, the words sounded bitter, every shred of humanism I felt for him slowly slipping away. The police stepped closer, I had no choice but to stretch out my hands. Just then— The sound of several boots filled the hallway, men in black strode in like the place belonged to them, they were the same men from the spa, I recognized the batch on their breast pocket. “ LET ME SEE WHO DARES” a voice thundered from the end of the hall, the threat hard to miss. My eyes traced down the hallway. And there he was. His face as cold as ice. His jaw tightly clenched like the world had offended him. Why was he here?.
