The next morning, I helped Avery get ready to go home. She insisted she could manage, but I refused to let her overexert herself. Seeing her fragile frame still made my chest ache. Liam had starved her and broken the promise he made to us. But now, she was safe.
When we arrived at her parents’ house, her mother was already waiting at the door. The moment she saw Avery, tears welled up in her eyes.
“Avery!” she cried, rushing forward to embrace her daughter. “Oh, my baby!”
Avery winced slightly as her mother hugged her too tightly, but she smiled. “I’m okay, Mom.”
Her father appeared behind her mother, his usual stern expression softening when he saw his daughter. “Avery,” he said gruffly, his voice thick with emotion. “We were so worried.”
