Keenan hoped his insight into their relationship was correct. “Can I get you something to drink?” the server asked Tucker. The men ordered a round of drinks and dinner as well. Dinner went smoothly. For most of the meal they talked of what had happened in their lives since they’d lost touch. The conversation was fairly benign, mainly the high points of what had gone on since they’d last seen each other: what Tucker was doing now in his career, why Keenan had gone into a small animal practice when he’d started out as a large animal vet, and apologies for not staying in touch. Finally, over dessert and after dinner drinks, they got to the topic Keenan had been most anxious to hear about, but afraid to bring up—Tucker’s divorce.
