16 Morning sunlight slanted across the bed. Jack opened his eyes and blinked, thinking that surely everything from the night before had been some sort of fever dream born of his need for Kate, his hope that they might somehow be together. No dream, though, because there she was next to him, her hair a scatter of sun-warmed brown against the pillow. One hand was curled up against her cheek, a curiously childlike position. But she was no child. No, she was definitely all woman. As he shifted his position, she stirred, eyes opening slowly.
