You know what I did then? I told Will Hargess to put on some makeup. He had to work on his hair to make it look like Arturo Madrid’s hair, like that big pompadour Arturo Madrid always wore. Finally Will made up a wig for himself. That man was a genius, a true genius. And he put on a false mustache. They called him the Charcoal Chaney because Lon Chaney was the man of a thousand faces, the world’s greatest makeup artist, and William Hargess was every bit the equal of Lon Chaney and light-complected to boot, and he made himself that wig and put on a false mustache and he doubled for Arturo Madrid and when we looked at the rushes we couldn’t tell the difference.
Except Hargess was a better actor.
We finished the films. Everything was in the big studio building left over from Essanay days. W
