19 I wake to the sound of floorboards creaking. My mouth is dry and my head is pounding. Kate is standing over me, holding a mug in her right hand. I know it’s pure human blood. I can smell the difference. She wants to force-feed me; I can tell by her crazed, focused stare. I won’t let her, though. I’ve come too far to give up now. And it hasn’t been a week yet. Has it? We lock eyes for what seems like a lifetime before she finally leaves the room. Maybe I’m dreaming—or hallucinating. But I doubt it…
