Chapter Six Kate

1337 Words
As I walked away from my daughter's room I shook my head. I knew there was something different about their friendship but I never really gave it much thought. I laughed to myself as I remembered all the times I'd seen them snuggled up on the couch together. I headed to my room and laid on my bed. I pulled my phone out and began to read an article about this year's flu season. Even though the Flu didn't seem to affect the wolves I still had a few human patients that I had to care for.  My eyes grew heavy so I put the phone down to get some rest before working an overnight shift at the hospital.   A little while later there was a soft knock on my door that pulled me from my sleep. I opened my eyes and watched as Elena opened the door, crossed the room to my bed, and climbed in.  "Hey Mom, we are out of coffee so I am going to go get some. Do you want me to pick up anything else?" She asked.  I yawned. "Nope, I'll plan a list of meals and go shopping after I find out my schedule for next week."  "Sounds good. I'm going to run by our favorite coffee place on the way home, you want some?" She said getting up.  "Sure! You know what I like." I said. I got up, walked over to my daughter, and wrapped her in a hug. "Elena, I'm okay with the fact you like girls." She blushed, "Thanks, Mom. I'm glad you know now." "Yeah well, I would have been perfectly fine being told instead of waking up to Becca moaning your name!" I crinkled my nose at her.   "Sorry, It's not the way I wanted you to find out. Trust me. It was embarrassing! And if we are being totally honest, I wasn't going to say anything unless I mated with a girl." She said shrugging.  "But you and Becca haven't imprinted, have you?" I asked.  "No. But last night got me thinking, I'm scared of who I'll imprint with. I'm comfortable around girls but I don't know the first thing about men."  She said sighing.  I laughed, "Well, I don't think you want to hear my advice on men because I've only ever been with your father."  "Yeah, I don't think I want to know," She crinkled her nose at me, which caused me to laugh even more. The older she got the more and more she looked and acted like me.  "That's what I thought! But I am sure that whoever your mate is, whether female or male, they will love you for you!" I said hugging her.  "Thanks, Mom. I love you!" She said and hugged me back. "I love you too Elena!" I said. "Now about that coffee! I have to be at work this evening at 8:00 PM so don't take forever at the store."  "Yeah, yeah. I'll hurry back! Bye, Mom." And with that, she turned, walked out of my room, and left. I got back in bed and waited until I heard her get in the care and start it before I laid back down. I dozed off again quickly.   ****** I was jerked awake by the phone going off sometime later. I glanced out the window and realized it was getting dark, the alarm clock on my side table read 6:00 PM. I looked at my phone and saw an unknown number, "Doctor Thomas." I answered. "Hello, Dr. Thomas. My name is Officer Davidson. I'm sorry to call you like this but you're daughter Elena, was in a car accident." He said calmly. My heart stopped and I could feel the adrenaline take over "Where is she?" I said as I quickly got out of bed and rushed around to gather things so I could leave. I had to get to my daughter. "She's at North River General. She was pretty banged up but from what I understand, she is stable." He said "Thank you," I whispered. "I know your priority is your daughter. But save this number and call when you are ready to meet with me and I will give you details about the accident." "Thank you, Officer Davidson." I hung up the phone. I was almost ready to walk out the door when a sob escaped my lips and I fell to my knees. I quickly reeled my emotions back in and got up. I didn't have time to let my emotions get the best of me. My daughter needed me. The drive to North River General was a blur. I drove as quickly and as carefully as I could. My mind flashing back to the one other time I received a similar call. My dear sweat Allen had gotten into a car accident a year ago with our 15-year-old daughter, Kelly in the back. When they told me there had been an accident and that I’d lost not only my husband but my youngest daughter, I lost it. I felt like my heart had been ripped through my chest. The only reason I didn’t go, rogue, was because I had Elena to think about. When I got to the parking lot I quickly found a spot to park and then rushed to the ER entrance. I found the Nurses station. They told me to take a seat and that the Doctor would be with me shortly. I sat and pulled out my phone and dialed Michael Bradshaw, he answered on the first ring. "Hey, Kate." "Hey, Mike. Is Becca there? Could I speak to her?" I said. "Um yeah. Just a second." He said and then there was silence for a few moments. "Hey Mrs. Thomas. What’s up?” “Becca, Elena was in a car accident. We are at North River General Hospital. They don’t have an update for me yet but I know she would want you here.” I said. “I’ll be there as soon as I can be!” She said quietly. “Thank you,” I said  I hung up the phone and I called my hospital to let them know I wouldn’t be available for a while. Then the Doctor came out. It was weird being on the other side, normally I was the one to talk to anxious family members. Today I was the anxious family.  "You must be Doctor Thomas, I am Doctor Jackson. We have Elena in the OR at this moment getting her cleaned up. She has a broken leg, a punctured lung, and some internal bleeding in her abdomen. She is stable." He said.  He went into detail explaining all they had done to patch my baby back up.  "When can I see her?" I asked. "As soon as she is moved into another room. She is still unconscious as of right now." He said. We made eye contact and I felt something stir deep down inside. "Thank you," I said taking a deep breath. I got smacked in the face by the smell of Blueberries. Oh, Goddess, I didn’t want another mate. Especially not a human!  "Are you okay?” He asked.  “Oh yes. I’m fine. I was just lost in thought for a moment.” I muttered. “You look very pale. Are you sure you are fine?” He reached out and touched my arm which sent chills down my spine.  “Yes, thank you. I think I just need some coffee.  I’ll be fine.” I said smiling.  “Okay, well I'll be the on-call Doctor making rounds this evening so I will be checking in on your daughter. Granted, with you being a Doctor she'll be in good hands regardless." He smiled at me and reached out his hand to shake mine. I shook his hand and again felt the fire burning inside as I made eye contact, “Thank you, Doctor Jackson.” “No problem and please, call me Steven! I’ll have a nurse come get you when Elena is set up in a room.”He smiled again and then left me standing there with my jaw on the floor.  Really?? Out of all the possible times to find another mate, it had to be at this hospital where my daughter is currently injured.  I pushed what just happened to the back of my mind, took a seat, and called Officer Davidson.
