Chapter Nine Elena

1033 Words
Slowly I opened my eyes blinking at the harsh lighting overhead. "Where am I?" I thought. I opened my mouth and began to speak but nothing more than a whisper escaped. My mouth was so dry. I focused on my voice and tried again. "Mom!" I called out. My eyes adjusted to the lighting just as Becca rushed to the bedside.   "Oh my gosh, Elena!" she squealed. Without warning, she leaned down and hugged me.   "Ow!" I gasped. I peered over her shoulder at the room, I realized I was in the hospital. She jerked back quickly, "I'm sorry if I hurt you. I'm just so happy you are finally awake!"   "Finally awake?" I asked roughly.    "Yeah dude, you've been unconscious for three days!" She said.   "What?" I said trying to sit up but the pain in my ribs was too much, I cursed and slouched back into bed.   I looked up at her, "Becca, what happened? I remember I was driving to the store and…" My voice trailed off as a flood of memories washed over me.   I was in an accident. I remembered entering the intersection and realizing there was a car barreling toward me. I remembered freezing, sending a prayer to the Goddess of Night, then the stomach-churning crunch and motion of the car rolling. The last memory I have of the accident was when I was upside down, fading in and out of consciousness, and the sounds of sirens in the distance. "Oh s**t," I muttered.  "Yeah, dude! You can't scare me like that again!" She said moving a stray strand of hair out of my face.  "Scare you like that? Do you know how scared I was??" I groaned playfully. "Okay, fair enough. I missed you!" She said. We made eye contact and she kissed me gently on the lips.  Feeling how dry my lips were against hers made me remember I needed some water. I pulled away and sighed.  "Becca! Will you do me a favor?" I asked giving her the best puppy dog eyes I could muster.  "Anything for you, bestie!" She said pulling away from me.  "Could you find a glass of water for me? Maybe some food!" I said as my stomach growled in protest.  “Sure thing. I’ll see if I can’t find your mom too.” She said "Speaking of mom, Where is she?" I asked.     "She said something about speaking to the Alpha. So I told her I'd stay with you." Becca replied.  "Weird. Why would she need to talk to the Alpha?" I asked as Becca went across the room and pulled some papers off the table.   "Apparently the man who hit you was the Alpha of the Moon Bay pack!" She handed me the papers and I started to glance through them.   It looked like the police report from the night of the accident. It was shocking to see some of the pictures. My poor car was totaled and I was lucky to be alive.  "Damn. This is rough!" I said glancing up at Becca.  "Tell me about it! I'll be right back! Don't go anywhere!" She said with a wink and she walked across the room and out the door.    With the door open all the smells and sounds from the hallway spilled into the room. I took a deep breath and winced at the pain. As I griped my side I realized that I could smell Apple pie and it made my mouth water and my stomach growl even more. I really wanted to find where that intoxicating smell was coming from but I couldn't even sit up. I huffed and closed my eyes. I set the file down and saw a remote on the bedside tray. I reached for it and quickly figured out how to turn on the TV. The smell was still present and my inner wolf was getting antsy as I tried to find some show to watch.  I settled for a show about ancient Egypt and glanced out the window. I was zoning out when Becca walked back in carrying a tray of food.   “Jackpot!” I said excitedly. Becca set the food and drink on the TV tray and she pressed some buttons on the side of the bed. The bed moved me into a sitting position. It felt great to sit up! I went to bend my leg and stopped when I realized my leg had a cast on it.  I chugged the water and was about to dig into the food when my mom burst into the room "Oh, Elena!" My mom said rushing toward me. "Oh, my sweet little girl! I thought I was going to lose you!" She leaned down to hug me.  “Why do you smell like an apple pie?” I asked.  She pulled back, gave me a weird looked and then smelled her shirt. “Maybe I need to check your head again because all I can smell is sweat!” She wrinkled her nose which made me laugh. The movement made my lungs burn and I began to cough and clutch my side. "What happened to me??" I groaned. "Well, what do you remember?” She asked “Well, I remember driving to the store and getting into an accident. I didn’t remember much past being stuck upside down until I read the police report.” I said pointing at the file. "So what injuries do I have?” I asked. “Well, you had a rib that broke and punctuated your lung. You also broke your leg in multiple places. The Doctor over at North River General got you all patched up and I got you transferred here before they noticed you were healing faster than most. I am just so glad you are okay! I was getting concerned that you weren't waking up." She said as tears welled in her eyes.  "It's okay, I'm still here!" I said pulling her towards me and into another hug. "I love you, Mom!"  "I love you too!" She said hugging me back.  As I inhaled again I thought to myself, "If my mom can't smell apple pie, does that mean my mate was here??"
