Chapter 15 — The Father Returns

1202 Words
The estate didn’t react to the breach like a place under attack. It reacted like a system fixing an error. Doors that hadn’t been visible before slid into place. Guards shifted positions without a word. Entire corridors went silent, like they’d been cut from access. Bella noticed it now. Not the chaos. The control underneath it. Vincenzo stood still for a moment after the radio message. Then he turned slightly. “Stay in this room,” he said. Bella exhaled sharply. “You said that last time and someone still got in.” “That’s why I’m changing the parameters,” he replied. “That doesn’t answer anything.” “It lowers the risk.” Before she could argue, he stepped out again — faster this time. The door closed behind him. Not locked. But sealed with intent. Bella stared at it for a moment. Then moved toward it. Not to leave. Just to hear. She pressed her ear lightly to the wood. Nothing. No footsteps. No shouting. Just the faint hum of the estate resetting itself. Then — a knock. Soft. Controlled. From inside the room. Bella froze. Slowly turned. Carmela stood there. Already inside. Like she’d always been there. Bella stepped back. “How did you—” “Secondary access,” Carmela said calmly. “Of course,” Bella muttered. Carmela didn’t react. Her eyes flicked briefly to the door Vincenzo had gone through. “He’s gone to the perimeter breach,” she said. “Is that where Dante is?” Bella asked immediately. A pause. “Yes.” That answer tightened something in Bella’s chest. Before she could process it, another voice came from outside the room. Male. Familiar. But older than she remembered. “Carmela.” Carmela straightened. Then opened the door. Bella turned. A man stood there. Not a guard. Not staff. A little older than Vincenzo, but with the same controlled posture. His presence wasn’t loud — but it filled the room anyway. He looked straight at Bella. For a long moment, he said nothing. Then: “So this is her.” Bella frowned. “Who are you?” Carmela didn’t interrupt. The man stepped inside. Calm. Unhurried. “Marco,” he said. Bella went still. The name hit heavier than she expected. Her father. He looked different from what she remembered. Less broken. More composed. Like someone who’d already decided how he’d carry himself before walking in. Bella’s voice dropped. “You’re not supposed to be here.” Marco gave a faint, tired look. “I wasn’t given many choices either,” he said. Carmela watched him closely. Bella stepped back slightly. “What’s going on?” Marco’s eyes flicked to the door Vincenzo had left through. Then back to her. “I came to see you,” he said. “Now?” she asked sharply. “While people are breaking into this place?” “That’s exactly why now,” he replied. A pause. Then he stepped closer. Bella didn’t move. “I need you to understand something,” Marco said. “I’ve heard that enough tonight,” she replied. A faint exhale. Then Marco looked at her directly. “Your grandfather didn’t tell you everything,” he said. Bella froze slightly. “That’s not news,” she said. “It is when you realize why,” he replied. Carmela shifted slightly in the background but stayed quiet. Marco went on. “You think you’re here because of a debt,” he said. Bella frowned. “Aren’t I?” “No,” he said. A pause. “Debt is just the word they use to make it acceptable.” That made Bella uneasy. “Then what is it?” she asked. Marco hesitated. Then said: “A transfer.” Silence. Bella stared at him. “A transfer of what?” Marco’s expression tightened. “Protection,” he said. “From who?” she pressed. He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he stepped closer again. “You’re asking the wrong question,” he said. Bella’s voice sharpened. “Then what’s the right one?” Marco looked at her. “Why your grandfather trusted Vincenzo more than anyone else alive.” That made her still. Carmela’s gaze sharpened at the name. Marco continued. “There’s a reason he chose him,” he said. “And it wasn’t sentiment.” Bella’s mind flashed back to everything she’d heard. Promises. Containment. Keys. “You keep talking like I was handed off,” she said quietly. Marco didn’t deny it. Instead: “You were,” he said. That confirmation hit harder than anything so far. Bella shook her head. “No.” “Yes,” Marco replied. Her voice tightened. “I’m not an object.” “No,” he said again. “This is where you’re wrong.” A pause. “You’re not an object,” he continued. “You’re leverage.” Silence. Bella stepped back slightly. “That’s worse,” she said quietly. Marco didn’t argue. Instead, he said: “And Dante knows it.” At that name, the air in the room shifted. Carmela moved closer to the door. Marco noticed. Then added: “He’s not here to take over the estate.” Bella frowned. “Then what’s he here for?” Marco looked at her directly. “To get back what your grandfather took out of circulation,” he said. Bella’s breath caught. “The necklace,” she said. Marco didn’t confirm. But he didn’t deny it either. A distant explosion echoed through the estate again. Closer now. Carmela spoke for the first time. “He’s moving faster than we expected,” she said. Marco nodded slightly. “Yes,” he replied. Then he looked at Bella again. And this time his voice softened. “I didn’t handle things well,” he said. Bella stared at him. “That’s an understatement,” she replied. A faint, strained exhale from him. “I know,” he said. A pause. Then: “But I’m not your enemy here.” Bella didn’t answer right away. Because she didn’t know if that was true. Or just another kind of control. Before she could speak, the door behind them opened again. Vincenzo came back in. The atmosphere changed instantly. Not louder. Denser. His eyes moved from Carmela. To Marco. Then to Bella. A long pause. Then: “You shouldn’t be here,” Vincenzo said to Marco. Marco met his gaze. “I already am,” he replied. Silence stretched between them. Not hostility. Something older. More complicated. Bella looked between them. And for the first time — she realized she wasn’t in the middle of one conflict. But several, stacked on top of each other. Vincenzo finally spoke again. “The breach has reached inner access,” he said. Marco nodded once. “I know.” Another pause. Then Vincenzo looked at Bella. And said quietly: “Stay behind me.” But this time — it didn’t sound like an order. It sounded like history repeating. From the estate’s main hall, a loud impact echoed — and then a new voice came through the internal speakers: “Vincenzo Conti. We’re inside. Hand her over, and this ends cleanly.”
