Bella didn’t sleep again.
This time it wasn’t confusion keeping her awake.
It was the certainty that something had shifted inside the estate, and no one was willing to explain the direction of that shift completely.
The words she had heard through the door kept playing back in pieces.
Move.
She still has it.
That second sentence didn’t belong anywhere in her life.
And yet it had been spoken in the same breath as Vincenzo’s voice.
By morning the estate looked unchanged.
That was the most unsettling part.
Breakfast still came in quietly. The hallways were still spotless. The staff still moved like shadows, purposeful but silent.
As if nothing had happened.
As if nothing was happening.
Bella sat in her room for almost an hour before she left it.
When she finally did, she didn’t go to the dining area.
She went the other way.
Deeper into the estate.
Not because she had a plan.
Because she was done waiting for someone else to decide what her life looked like.
The hallway she took was quieter than all the others. Less traffic. Less movement. The kind of space people only used when they had to.
At the end of it, she found a door that was partly open.
Voices inside.
Male.
Controlled.
Bella slowed immediately and pressed herself lightly against the wall beside the entrance.
She listened.
You should have warned me earlier, one voice said.
It was Vincenzo.
Calm, but sharper.
I did not expect escalation this soon, another voice replied.
Not Carmela.
Different.
Lower.
More deliberate.
A pause.
Then Vincenzo again. You knew the risk.
Silence.
Then the second voice answered, quieter.
I knew the possibility.
Bella frowned slightly.
She leaned in a little closer without stepping inside.
Vincenzo’s voice came again. Where is he now?
A brief hesitation.
Still outside Milan.
That is not precise enough.
A faint pause.
Then, he is moving toward the perimeter.
Bella’s stomach tightened slightly.
Perimeter.
That word again.
She moved slightly, careful not to make a sound.
Inside, the second voice kept going.
He is not here for you.
A pause.
Then he added, Not primarily.
A subtle change came into Vincenzo’s tone.
Define primarily.
Silence.
Then, he is here for her.
Bella froze.
Her breath caught on its own.
Her.
That meant her.
She leaned in closer against the wall.
Inside the room, Vincenzo didn’t speak immediately.
When he finally did, his voice was lower.
Confirmed identification?
Yes.
Another pause.
Then Vincenzo exhaled slowly.
Then tighten internal access, he said.
No one leaves without clearance.
The second voice hesitated.
Does that include her?
A beat of silence.
Longer this time.
Then Vincenzo said, Especially her.
Bella’s fingers curled slightly.
That word again.
Especially.
She stepped back quietly from the wall.
Her pulse was steady, but sharper now.
More focused.
She didn’t catch everything, but she caught enough.
This wasn’t a coincidence.
She was a point of focus.
Which meant everything she’d been told so far was missing pieces.
She stepped away from the door before anyone saw her and moved quickly down the corridor.
Not running.
Not yet.
But moving with intent.
She needed answers.
Not fragments.
Not warnings.
Answers.
She made her way to the central wing of the estate, where she’d seen Vincenzo coming and going the most. The closer she got, the heavier the building felt.
More movement. More control.
At one point a guard passed her.
He didn’t stop her.
But he watched her longer than he needed to.
That alone told her she was no longer invisible when she moved.
She reached the main corridor near Vincenzo’s office.
The door was closed.
She didn’t hesitate this time.
She opened it.
Vincenzo was inside.
Alone.
He looked up immediately.
Not surprised.
Not alarmed.
Prepared.
That irritated her more than anything.
You were listening, he said.
Bella stepped inside fully. No. I was excluded from something that involves me.
A pause.
Then he closed the file in front of him.
Who told you, he asked.
That’s your first question, she replied. Not are you okay or why are you awake at this hour?
Vincenzo stood slowly.
I already know the answers to those, he said.
That answer made her pause briefly.
Then she moved closer to the desk.
What is going on, she asked directly.
Vincenzo studied her for a moment.
Then he said, There is a situation developing beyond the estate.
I heard that.
Yes.
And I heard I’m the reason.
A faint pause.
Then, You are a variable.
Bella stared at him.
That’s not a person.
It is a classification, he replied.
Her expression tightened. I’m not a classification.
No, Vincenzo said quietly.
You are not.
That slight change in his tone made her hesitate.
But she pushed forward anyway.
What does she still has it mean, she asked.
For the first time, something in Vincenzo’s expression tightened.
Not fear.
Constraint.
You should not have heard that, he said.
That’s not an answer.
It is a warning.
A warning about what?
A pause.
Then he said, About what others believe you possess.
Bella felt cold that had nothing to do with the temperature.
I don’t have anything, she said.
Vincenzo’s gaze stayed steady.
That’s not true, he replied.
Before she could answer, the door behind them opened without knocking.
Carmela stepped in.
Her expression was more tense than usual.
Sir, she said quickly. We have a confirmed sighting near the eastern road.
Vincenzo turned immediately.
Distance?
Less than ten kilometers.
Silence dropped into the room instantly.
Bella looked between them.
Ten kilometers from what, she asked.
No one answered her.
That was answer enough.
Vincenzo moved toward the desk and pulled something from inside a drawer, a black glove, already half worn like he had expected to be interrupted.
Carmela kept going, voice lower.
He is not alone.
A pause.
Then, Dante is with him.
The name landed differently.
Not loud.
Not dramatic.
But heavy.
Vincenzo stopped for half a second.
Then he exhaled once.
Controlled.
Lock down secondary entrances, he said.
Carmela nodded and left immediately.
Bella stepped forward slightly.
Who is Dante, she asked.
Vincenzo looked at her.
And for the first time since she arrived,
he didn’t answer right away.
Which meant she already had her answer.
Just not the version she was allowed to hear yet.
Outside the estate, the night had started to shift.
And whatever had been circling her life
was now close enough to arrive.
As Bella turned back toward the hallway, she noticed something new for the first time,
a black rose placed neatly against the estate’s inner gate.
