As quietly as I could, I turned the key in the lock of my door and squeezed inside to find Jake sprawled across my futon. The smell test told me he’d showered. His head was under the pillow, so I couldn’t see his face. I eased off my boots right there by the door so the sound of my footsteps wouldn’t wake him. After I showered, I snuck a peek around the entranceway to see if Jake was still sleeping. He sat there chugging a glass of water. Even though he was clean, he looked horrible. His eyes pinned me before I could shrink away. My heartbeat sped up under his gaze and I realized I was nervous. “Hi…” I mouthed, feeling shy. He just looked at me for a few more seconds in silence, his face unreadable. Then he lay back down, facing away from me without a word. It shocked me until the hurt
