The next few weeks brought a shift—subtle at first, but undeniable.
Elena kept her head down, focusing on herself. The gym became her sanctuary, her routine became non-negotiable, and every day, she felt a little stronger.
But the world around her wasn’t so quick to adjust.
Taylor hadn’t confronted her again—not directly—but Elena could feel the resentment simmering beneath the surface. The whispers hadn’t stopped, nor had the judgmental glances.
And then there was Brian.
He had started acknowledging her in small ways—a nod in the hallway, an awkward smile, even a few words exchanged in passing. It was strange, almost surreal.
But Elena wasn’t sure if she cared.
She had spent so long craving his friendship, and now that he was making an effort… it just didn’t matter the way it once did.
The past was the past.
And she was moving forward.

A New Distraction
It started with a simple text.
Luca: "Sparring today?"
Elena smirked at her phone.
Elena: "Is that a challenge?"
Luca: "Maybe."
She rolled her eyes, but her heart raced a little.
Luca had become an unexpected constant in her life.
He was easygoing, confident, and ridiculously fit—everything she was still learning to be.
But most of all, he never treated her like she was fragile.
And she liked that.
That evening, Elena pushed open the gym doors, greeted by the familiar scent of sweat, metal, and rubber flooring.
Luca was already there, wrapping his hands in preparation for their sparring session. His dark eyes lifted when he saw her, a slow smirk playing at his lips.
“Look who finally decided to show up,” he teased.
Elena rolled her eyes. “I was on time.”
Luca shrugged. “Five minutes late is still late.”
She scoffed, grabbing her own wraps. “Says the guy who takes an extra ten minutes to flex in the mirror after a workout.”
Luca pressed a hand against his chest in a mock offense. “First of all, it’s only five minutes. Second, the people deserve to see this.”
Elena snorted, shaking her head as she finished wrapping her hands.
Luca was impossible.
But in a weird way, he made the gym feel… lighter.
Less like a battlefield and more like a place where she belonged.
And she wasn’t sure how to feel about that.

Into the Ring
Elena stepped onto the mat, bouncing on the balls of her feet.
Luca followed, rolling his shoulders. “Alright, rules are simple. No cheap shots, and if you go for the face, at least make it a good one.”
She smirked. “Afraid I’ll mess up that pretty face?”
Luca grinned. “Nah. I’m afraid you’ll get distracted.”
Elena scoffed but didn’t let herself take the bait. She focused, settling into her stance.
Luca circled her, testing her reflexes with a few quick jabs that she dodged easily.
But he wasn’t really attacking yet.
He was testing her.
Trying to see how much she’d learned.
Elena wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction of holding back.
She moved first, feinting left before sweeping low.
Luca barely dodged in time. His brows lifted in amusement. “Alright, I see you.”
Elena smirked. “You should.”
She struck again, this time faster.
Luca blocked, but the force of it made him take a step back.
For the first time, she saw something flicker in his gaze.
Not amusement.
Not teasing.
But respect.
And damn if that didn’t make her stand a little taller.

Aftermath
Forty-five minutes later, they both collapsed onto the mat, panting.
Elena wiped sweat from her forehead, still catching her breath. “You’re—way too—fast.”
Luca chuckled, shaking his head. “And you’re way stronger than you think.”
She turned her head to look at him, but his expression was unreadable.
Then, to her surprise, he sat up and held out a hand.
She hesitated for a moment before taking it.
His grip was warm, solid.
And when he pulled her up, he didn’t immediately let go.
“Elena,” he said softly, watching her.
Something in his tone made her chest tighten.
She wasn’t sure if it was the exhaustion, the endorphins, or the way he was looking at her, but for the first time in a long time…
She felt seen.
And it scared her.
So she did what she always did when things got complicated.
She pulled away.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” she said quickly, grabbing her bag.
Luca didn’t stop her.
But as she walked out of the gym, she could feel his eyes on her.
And for the first time since she started this journey, she realized that changing herself physically was the easy part.
It was everything else that terrified her.
