The mirror in Elena’s bedroom was unforgiving.
She stood in front of it, arms limp at her sides, staring at the reflection that had haunted her for years. The dim glow of her bedside lamp cast shadows across her features, but it couldn’t hide the reality staring back at her.
Her round face. The fullness of her arms. The curve of her stomach beneath the oversized hoodie she always wore was like a shield between herself and the world.
She sucked in a breath, pulling at the fabric, as if that alone could erase the shape of her body. As if that alone could make her smaller.
It didn’t.
A bitter laugh escaped her lips, dry and humorless.
She had stood here before—too many times to count. Staring, wishing, hating. It never changed anything.
She turned away sharply, heading toward her bed and grabbing her phone from the nightstand. She needed a distraction. Something—anything to pull her away from this moment.
Her thumb hovered over the social media icons, but she knew better.
She didn’t need to see more pictures of Taylor and her perfect, model-like figure. She didn’t need to scroll past photos of Josh with his arms draped around girls like they belonged there.
And she definitely didn’t need to see the not-so-subtle memes posted by Brian and his friends—jokes about fat girls, about people “who should just stay home instead of trying.”
Her jaw clenched.
Instead, almost without thinking, she tapped open her browser.
She hesitated.
And then, her fingers moved.
"How to lose weight."
"Best workouts for beginners."
"How to change your life."
Pages upon pages of results flooded her screen. Some looked too extreme, promising impossible results in weeks. Others were detailed, filled with meal plans and workout routines that seemed designed for people who already belonged in a gym.
She exhaled shakily, her thumb scrolling through the overwhelming list.
Then, a thumbnail caught her eye.
A transformation video.
The woman in the preview had a round face and a softer body—had to be the keyword. The title read: "How I Lost 100 Pounds and Changed My Life."
Elena hesitated only for a second before clicking.
The woman’s voice filled the quiet room.
"I used to hate myself. I was bullied. I avoided mirrors. I thought I would always be stuck in that body, stuck in that version of myself. But one day, I just… decided. I took control. It wasn’t easy. It hurt. I wanted to quit so many times. But I didn’t. And now, I am the strongest I have ever been—physically and mentally."
Elena swallowed, her fingers tightening around her phone.
She had heard things like this before. Seen the stories, the before-and-after pictures.
But this time, something felt different.
Maybe because today had been her worst yet.
Maybe because today had been the day she truly felt like she couldn’t do this anymore.
Or maybe… maybe because some part of her was done waiting for things to magically change.
Her hands trembled as she exited the video and went back to searching.
"Gyms near me."
Her heart pounded as she scrolled past the results. Most looked intimidating—massive facilities filled with serious athletes, professional bodybuilders, and people who probably wouldn’t give her a second glance.
But then one caught her eye.
Iron Haven Gym—Open 24/7. Beginner-friendly training is available.
Her stomach twisted.
She imagined stepping inside. The sound of weights clanking, people grunting, running, lifting—moving like they belonged there.
And then there would be her. The girl who couldn’t even run halfway across a gym without gasping for air.
The voice in her head sneered. You’ll embarrass yourself.
Her finger hovered over the link.
She could close the tab. Forget about it. Pretend this never happened.
But then she thought of Taylor’s laughter.
Josh looking away, like she didn’t even exist.
The way Brian groaned at the idea of being paired with her.
Her chest tightened.
Elena inhaled sharply, pressing her lips together.
Then, before she could talk herself out of it, she stood up.
She grabbed a pair of sneakers, ones that had barely been worn. She slipped them on, hands shaking as she tied the laces.
The moment felt unreal.
Are you really doing this?
A flicker of doubt threatened to rise, but she shoved it down.
She grabbed her hoodie, pulled it over her head, and forced herself toward the door before she could hesitate again.
One step at a time.
Because if she didn’t start now… she never would.
And she refused to stay trapped in this life forever.
