I reached out to pat Yvette on the back as I softly murmured, “Yvette, don’t be scared. It’s only a rat?”
“Is it really a rat?”
It was hard for Yvette to take that in after the huge scare.
Looking at the teary-eyed girl, I extended my hand to brush against her nose and wiped her tears in between.
“It’s true. What? Did you think the skeleton came to life?”
Put off by my cheekiness, Yvette freed herself from my arms and scoffed.
“Why are you laughing? I almost had a heart attack!”
“Don’t worry, Yvette. I’ll protect you even if these skeletons come to life. Over my dead body would I allow anyone to harm my Yvette.”
That at least wiped the scowl off Yvette’s face. I turned my attention to the skeletal remains. By the looks of them with the daggers, and knives, a fight must have broken
