"Alright amigos! We are going swimming now and you have nothing to say about it" I told my three best friends and older brother as we entered the common room. It felt like it had been weeks since I had been swimming. Technically, we weren't supposed to swim in the Black Lake, due to the dangerous things that may or may not live there, but no one really listened to that. We'd made it back to the common room with minimal disturbances, although Lily had refused to let go of my hand as we walked, I didn't really mind though. The guys were laughing the entire time, shoving each other around and joking. It was really nice to see.
"Shiyloh!" I heard two distinct voices over the chatter.
I looked and saw Alice running towards me, Molly not far behind her, both of them looking equally excited.
Alice jumped up and hugged me, wrapping her arms around my neck as Molly came up behind her and moved to hug my side.
"I'm glad to see I was missed" I joked as we pulled away. They laughed slightly.
"We're glad to have you back Shiy" They told me.
“I really don't understand what the big deal is. I was just sick for a little while.”
Or was I?
The girls made eye contact with each other and nodded.
“We still missed you though.” Alice said. I smiled gratefully at her.
"Little Loh!" Uh-oh.
"I thought I'd escaped those two" I told the girls as I was thrown onto two sets of broad shoulders. I let out a small yelp at the sudden lift and heard laughs.
"Fabian! Gideon! As much as I missed my favourite twins, can you let me down?" I asked politely.
"Hm, I don't think so. Remus, would you mind if we borrowed her?" Fabian asked as him and Gideon walked paces around the common room, perfectly in sync with each other.
"We were about to go swimming, but I think we can lend her to you later" Remus informed them.
They pouted and I laughed, jumping down from their shoulders. My feet hit the ground a little painfully, but I turned around and hugged the boys briefly before pulling away.
"It's alright boys, when I get back, we have some thing to discuss" I smirked at them.
They looked slightly scared, but slightly curious as I hopped off to mine and Lily's dormitory, where Lily was having fashion problems . . . Again. Oi-vay.
"Shiy! Perfect timing! I need help, I can't decide on what to wear!" She fretted as she dug through her closet.
"What's the big deal Lil? We're just going down to the lake. Are you trying to impress someone?" I smirked remembering when she kissed Elliotts cheek.
"No!" She protested, but the blush on her cheeks said differently. "I just want to look nice"
I, still smirking, went over to mine and Lily's closet, rummaging through to find bathing suits.
"You look hot Lils" I said as Lily came out of the bathroom wearing the swimsuit that I had picked out for her.
"You don't look too bad either" I smiled.
"Oh why thank you" I said, flipping my hair dramatically.
We laughed and walked down the stairs.
As we walked into the common room, there were wolf whistles and cat calls, I could see Remus, Elliott and Jasper glaring at them. The over-protective brother, the best friend who has a crush on my other best friend and, unfortunately, the over-protective best friend.
I raised an eyebrow at them and stuck my middle finger up at them before walking out with 3/4 of the Kings behind us. The walk inside the castle was cool and made goosebumps appear on my arms, but as soon as we were out in the sun, it got much warmer.
I felt eyes burning into my back, staring me up and down, I ignored them for most of the walk down,, too caught up in my conversation with Lily to really care but then I heard and snack and an OW! I turned behind me to see Jasper rubbing the back of his head and Remus glaring at him. Lily giggled at them before looking back at me.
"Jasper was staring at you" She whispered to me, in an answer to my confused expression.
"He was not. Why would he stare at me?" I asked.
"Because you're gorgeous and he likes you"
"Why would someone ever like me?" I said dryly. I was doing it again, and I knew I was going to get in trouble for saying what I was about to.
"I'm a shy introvert and a freak Lily" By now we'd reached the Lake and were setting our stuff down. I grabbed my towel out of my bag and began to lay it out nicely.
"SHIYLOH ROSALYN LAWRENCE!" Lily shouted I jumped back in shock, the boys did the same "YOU ARE NOT A FREAK! STOP THINKING YOU ARE!"
I was personally shocked and scared, Lily never raised her voice. Only in very rare occasions did Lily raise her voice to anything above an exclamation. The only times I've heard her yell at someone was when Powell had tried sleeping out front of the common room near the end of last year and she'd sent him away screaming.
"What's going on?" Remus asked. I looked pleadingly at Lily, asking her to not tell my brother, I didn't want a lecture when I'd just become sixteen again. But Lily ignored this look and turned to Remus, opening her mouth to tell him exactly what had been going on.
I took that chance to drop the rest of my stuff, shedding my sun glasses, t-shirt, shorts and sandals, before sprinting into the lake to avoid the lecture I was about to get. I'd avoided this lecture before, many times in fact. It was rare that Remus or Lily could corner me to have this rant with me, most of the time I dodged them until they forgot about it.
I saw Lily making grand gestures with her hands and Remus looked slightly sad, which made me feel bad. I didn't want them to feel bad, I never did. I don't generally talk about my appearance much just for that reason. Jasper and Elliott seemed to be listening, and seemed equally perplexed by the topic of conversation. It was moments like these that I almost wished that I had some sort of super human hearing so that I could hear what they were saying.
Instead, I dove under the water again, taking in a large breath of air before I did so. I opened my eyes in the slightly murky water, seeing the weeds move in the slight disturbances that I had made, the algae that grew on rocks that sat untouched at the bottom of the deep water.
I felt something swim by me. My heart skipped as the feeling of impending danger crept up on me. I turned to see three Merpeople staring at me from below. Their skin was tinged green and their eyes were slitted. Their feet were webbed, just like we had learned about in classes. Although, they seemed a little less threatening than the Professors had made them seem. Maybe they just didn't want anyone swimming in the lake.
When they noticed my looking at them, they bowed their heads to me and swam away all in one very quick motion.
What-the-actual-f**k?
I heard three loud splashes around me and knew that Remus, Jasper and Elliott had jumped in. The weeds at the bottom moved harshly as I moved. I swam away from them, avoiding the argument that I hoped I had dodged. Luckily, I did. When I resurfaced Remus was in front of me, smiled softly at me. He seemed to not want to talk about the problem, seemingly trying to ignore it.
"I missed having you around Shiy" He told me, bringing me into a hug.
"I missed being around Rem." I paused "Hey Remus?" I started.
"Yeah?" He said, pulling away from me, just enough to look at me.
"Have you ever heard of Merpeople bowing to a human?" I asked
"No, not ever, their very proud people, why?" He responded
"No reason, no reason" I said quickly, but I knew that I wasn't "Nothing"
