Elliott and Jasper were on the floor wrestling while Rhys was eating chocolate and I was reading a book, when we heard a pop, meaning Fleamont and Euphemia were home. Jasper and Elliott ceased their wrestling, laughing at each other and shrugging off what injuries the other person had caused.
"Hey Mom! What's for-"
"Jasper! Remus! Elliott! I need the medical equipment! NOW!" We looked at each other, not understanding why Euphemia needed the medical equipment, neither her or Fleamont had ever come home injured, they were too practised to get hurt on a mission, and from what they told us before they left, it wasn't even a complicated mission.
Either way, we ran into the bathroom and gathered the medical supplies, Jasper looking extremely confused and slightly fearful, like he was wondering if his parents were okay.
“I'm sure they're okay Jasper.” Elliott told him, putting a hand on his shoulder.
Jasper nodded his head and lead us out of the bathroom, into the hallway and through the door to another room where Euphemia was hovering over someone. All I could see from where I stood in the doorway was ginger hair splayed across a pillow, little bits of deep red blood staining the white pillowcase from where Euphemia had moved them.
We stepped closer, a little tentatively, Jasper went forwards to give his mother his part of the medical supplies and as Euphemia turned around to grab it, I got a look at the girls face. I felt my heart drop into my stomach and the air leave my lungs. For a moment I was frozen, staring at the girl in utter fear. Then, I got control over my system.
"Shiyloh!" I ran forwards to my baby sister. She didn't move, didn't turn her head to look at me. Her eyes were closed and her skin was abnormally pale. Her freckles stood out on her cheeks, like someone was sprinkled cinnamon all over her face. What caught my attention most though, was the growing bruises that took residence on the right side of her face, and down her arms, over her neck, just about everywhere.
I got down on my knees in front of her, on the other side from Euphemia as I didn't want to disturb her healing my sister. I Looked down at her face, my heart pounding in my chest as I wondered what had happened to her. She had been fine when I left a few days ago.
"Remus. You know her?" Elliott asked. Him and Jasper were standing closer now, closer enough to see her face. Jasper was staring down at her, not saying anything.
"She's my baby sister! What happened!?" I demanded. I brushed off Elliott and Jasper in that moment, my attention staying with Shiyloh.
"Your mother has been torturing her" Excuse me, what?
"She- How- What?" I stuttered out as Euphemia helped heal Shiyloh. She was so pale! More so than usual!
"Your mother has been torturing her with curses on her for years. I'm surprised that she's survived this long" Euphemia turned to me briefly with a look of pity before turning back to Shiyloh, administering some potions to her bruises and cuts. The bleeding at the back of her head had stopped thankfully.
I looked at my baby sister. How did I miss this!? For years! I haven't been there for her! I grabbed her limp hand and ran my thumb over her knuckles. Oh Merlin, I let this happen to her. If I had stayed home more often then maybe I would have noticed something wrong. The only times I really saw Shiyloh was Christmas time and little bits during the summer. Each time she seemed fine, she seemed like my beautiful, normal, happy little sister. But apparently not.
Euphemia rushed us out, saying that she needed to concentrate on healing Shiyloh, which was enough for me to force the other boys out of the room. Now, Elliott, Jasper, Rhys and I sat on the couch. It was disturbingly quiet in the room, we couldn't hear Euphemia muttering spells in the other room. Fleamont had taken my mother to the ministry to hold her for her trial. Even with the trial, she would most likely end up in prison with a ten year minimum sentence. Not only for child abuse, but for using an unforgivable curse more than once.
My mother was going to prison for torturing my little sister to the point where she was passed out in someone's house while a Soldier did everything she could to save her. It helped the tiniest bit that the Soldier in question was my best friends mum, but not by much. Euphemia had told us that she was going to do what she could and if she couldn't heal everything, she would take Shiyloh to Saint Goldvalleys hospital. I just hoped it wouldn't come down to that.
Finally, Jasper turned to me, he opened his mouth for a second, and then closed it again. He thought his words over before he spoke them.
"You have a sister?!" Jasper exclaimed. He stopped for a second, I assumed that it came out louder than it should have.
"Yeah" I muttered.
"Care to explain?" Elliott asked carefully. I look over at him and his expression was gentler than Jasper'.
I sighed. I tried not to let the tears out of my eyes as I thought of my baby sister.
"She's four minutes younger than me. I never noticed that she was being beaten or mistreated in anyway, I thought that everything was fine. I love my baby sister more than anything. My mother always treated me okay, I thought that Shiyloh was the same way. When we got our Beaverstone letters, Shiyloh also got one from the Salem Institute, she didn't want to go at first we'd been so excited to go to Beaverstone together, but the next day she had changed her mind. I'd assumed she'd just had a simple change of heart, but now thinking back, I'm not sure that any of her "Sudden changes of heart" were actually that. How many times have I blatantly missed her being hurt because I wasn't paying enough attention, or because I wasn't there?" I put my head in my hands, roughly grabbing at my hair.
"That's deep dude" Elliott said. He probably knows what it's like to be tortured by a family member. He reached over and patted my shoulder.
"Yeah" I sighed.
"Wait Remus, does she know about your, um, Furry Little Problem?" Jasper asked. He'd been quiet until then, almost quieter than Rhys.
"Who do you think helps him every full moon?" My head shot up and I turned to see my red headed sister. She was wearing a long sleeve shirt that was too big for her and leggings that seemed to fit okay.
I shot up from the couch, my feet carrying my over to her faster than I thought possible, and I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her close to me. She grabbed the back of my t-shirt with her smaller hands. I squeezed her tightly, slightly afraid that if I let her go, she'd disappear.
"I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry that I wasn't there for you" I muttered into her hair.
"It wasn't your fault. Mother wouldn't let me say anything. For obviously reasons I guess.” She chuckled a little bit, but I didn't laugh.
“I should have noticed something was up, that something was happening to you. I'm so sorry.”
“It's okay” She said “I forgive you. And besides, now I can go to Beaverstone with you, if you don't mind of course.” As she neared the end of her sentence her words became shier, like she was afraid I didn't want her around.
“Of course I want you to come with me. I'm not letting you out of my sight again.” I warned her.
“That's okay, I like when you're around.” She pulled away slightly, wincing as she moved. I move my hands from her sides fast. She smiled at me though, like I hadn't hurt her.
"I'm glad Shiy. You'll be able to meet Lily and Alice." I said to her, hoping to bring her mind from the bad things.
Shiyloh smiled up at me. I felt a little better, but I pulled her in for another hug, which made her laugh. I smiled and let her go finally, pulling the hair from her eyes. The bruises around her eyes were almost gone, thanks to the potions she had been given.
Someone cleared their throat behind me. "Remus. Aren't you going to introduce us"
Shiyloh yelped and hid behind me. I chuckled, I'd almost forgotten how shy she is around people. Especially people our age. She peaked around me at the boys, which made them grin.
"Ello Love, I'm Elliott Black" Elliott greeted, grabbing Shiyloh's hand and kissed her knuckles. Shiyloh shrunk back and I growled at Elliott.
"Back off" I warned
He put his hands up in mock defence and laughed “I'm just being polite Remus.”
Rhys walked up next and smiled shyly at her.
"Hi, I'm Rhys Albyn" He said. Shiyloh shyly reached out and they shook hands. I knew Rhys wouldn't try anything, he was too polite to.
I looked to Jasper, who had been planted in his spot, staring at me, or should I say, staring at Shiyloh.
I cleared my throat and that seemed to knock him out of whatever he was in.
"Burton. Jasper Burton" He introduced, Shiyloh shook his hand and looked at me.
"The shy one" She pointed to Rhys, who smiled. "The Womanizer" She pointed to Elliott who scowled at me, I was really trying not to laugh. "And the Annoying Leader" Jasper looked at me with a "Really? Are you kidding me?" Look.
"Hey I had to describe you guys somehow!" I looked around at my friends. "Now that well all know each other let's set some boundaries. No one and I mean NO ONE, flirts with my sister"
But even as the words left my mouth, I knew that rule would be broken.
