3: Making a Wrong Choice

Ryan pov the agency-borns are potential assets. They are trained from their birth- quite literally- and because of the environment they grow up in, they make natural field agent. Unlike a lot of children, they are wild, free, daunting, bold and extremely competitive. And they are not very familiar with the boundaries in their lives. They like to push things: physical limits, mental limits, and even the limits of our patience, which don't always end up well. They tend to get in trouble with the instructors and their parents a lot because they do whatever they want to do as long as they can justify their actions. I get it, it's because of the nature of the agency which instructs the recruits to act independently in the field. They grew up watching their parents argue with senior agents all the time for who knows what. So it's basically in their nature to do what they believe is right. And we don't have anything against that: accept that usually what they believe is right, is not right. I am an agency-born myself and back then I was just like them- I couldn't understand why my instructors couldn't let it pass when I say that I thought what I did was no big deal. But now that I am an instructor, that particular nature of the agency-borns is what pisses me off to no end. Like now. I can swear to God with clear conscience that I have told Kyle and Shai NOT to do anything foolish when the new recruits arrive. I said during the assembly, to every agency-born, and said it again to Kyle and Shai before the lights out. ------90 minutes ago------- third person POV Ryan let the recruits into their barracks where they will be living for the next twelve months. He expected no surprise, as he thought he warned the agency-borns about the consequence of their actions. Apparently not. The second he opened the door, the lights went out. Almost instantly, a commotion broke loose among the recruits; pushing each other, throwing profanies. "What the hell is this?" "Freak?" "Hey, stop pushing me!" Ryan took a step into the barrack, almost certain that it was one of his agency-borns playing a prank. And he even had a good idea who they were: Shai-Lyn and Kyle. Then his breath stopped abruptly with the sound of water splashing on a surface: a bucket of ice water poured onto him. Unfortunately along with the water, the plastic bucket also fell, causing a recruit to trip on it. Things quickly escalated as the tripped recruit fell onto another recruit ... and so on and so forth. In a few minutes the entrance of the barrack was a mess. Ryan, feeling annoyed, called the control centre. "Instructor Ryan O'Connor, badge number SA160624. The lights are out at the recruits barracks hallway. Turn it back on. And muster the agency-borns. Thanks." In a few seconds, the lights came back on. He felt the frustration rise in him as he looked at the scene- the whole way was literally covered with water, and a recruit was on ground with a broken nose. Her sky blue shirt was soaked with dark red blood. "Attention," he called out. The recruits snapped into attention, including the one with a broken nose. "What's your name?" he asked, pointing at the injured recruit. "Danielle Collins, sir," she answered, blood still pouring from her nose. "Everyone except Collins get your asses into the barrack and don't come out until I come back. Don't do anything in there," he ordered. The recruits obliged, and he took Collins to the infirmary, leaving her there. He made his way down to the room where the agency-borns were mustered up. Frustrated, he scanned the room, and locked eyes with one particular kid. "I want everyone who was involved in pranking the recruits today to step up right now," he ordered in a low tone of voice. Two fifteen-year-old teenagers rose from their seats. "Why am I not surprised?" he spat. ----------- Kyle's POV I feel so bad for Shai right now. Surprising, but she didn't want to take any part in this: I practically dragged her into pulling this prank. If anything, she tried to dissuade me from doing it. Now because of me, she has to face our very pissed off instructor with me... who's hair is wet which I assume is from the bucket of water I set up. s**t, that's probably what pissed him off even more. "I'd appreciate honesty as usual: who's idea was it to pull the prank?" Ryan asks, frustration seeping through his words. s**t he's upset. "Me," I answered quietly, trying hard not to meet Ryan's death glare. "That's five more for you. Which one of you hack into the lightning system?" he asks again. That's me again. Shai has never been good at programming for some reason. I slowly raise my hand, keeping my eyes on the ground. Nonetheless, I can feel the burning of Ryan's glare. "Another five for you," he says sternly. How many is he planning on giving us? "I can't believe it. Was the last punishment not hard enough for you, Kyle Daley?" Before I even have a chance to answer it, he speaks again. "Apparently it wasn't. It seems like I need to reinforce the lesson to both of you again." I gulp, my heart racing. "The two of you just have to go against my words, huh? What did I tell you about pranking the recruits?" "Not to prank them, sir," we answer. "Exactly," he sighs a little. "Who's going first?" I don't need to be told what that 'going first' means. Neither of us say anything, although we know it's a bad choice: Ryan's patience is running low. I can tell it by the way his lips are pressed in a thin line. After about five seconds of silence, he finally snaps. "No? You're going to ignore me like this? Fine, you'll pay for that. Daley, get over here." Suddenly, the tip of my toes become the most interesting thing in the world. My legs freeze in the spot. Should I run? Hmmm, why not. I'm already in trouble. With one swift motion, he pushes me down onto the table. While placing a firm hand on my back, he grabs a wooden paddle. s**t, the cane hurts more, but the wooden paddle means I have a LONG s******g coming my way. And that evil implement bruises you quite easily. He wastes no time in commencing my punishment. Sharp and stinging smacks rain down on my behind. "Why is that you never think of the consequences of your actions until you actually face them? SMACK I don't understand SMACK how you disobeyed me right after I told you something? SMACK SMACK I told you TWICE SMACK not to do anything foolish this year with the recruits SMACK and that I will not tolerate any of your disobedience in this matter SMACK yet you still go against my words. Why is that?" My butts are on f*****g fire. This hurts like hell! "Owww Ryan... I'm sorry owww!" "I'll tell you when you're sorry enough SMACK You know, SMACK every time I start to think you are matured enough SMACK you bring me down. SMACK Every single time." Ouch. I swear this man has mastered the art of discipline. He does not let you stay on that desk for a second, not regretting what you did. And he won't stop punishing you until you are very very sorry. "What on earth made you think SMACK that it was a good idea to disobey me SMACK and on top of that, hack into our network, messing things up? Just because you can, SMACK doesn't mean you should! SMACK seriously, turning the lights off? SMACK SMACK someone could've seriously gotten hurt. SMACK and besides what if some other instructor SMACK thought it was a cyber attack SMACK against us and called for a situation? SMACK What were you thinking? SMACK SMACK" "I... I wasn't thinking! Oww it hurts!" I didn't think it could have been considered as a situation. s**t, I screwed up again. "Oh, yes. You weren't thinking. SMACK I know you weren't. Otherwise you wouldn't have SMACK found yourself in this position SMACK Am I right Daley? SMACK" Ugh, it hurts! It f*****g hurts! "Yes, sir! You're right!" He lands a hard smack on my thighs. "Watch your tone, young man," he warns me. "I am so disappointed in you SMACK You didn't only pull a simple prank. SMACK That's not what this is about. SMACK You defied me, strike one. SMACK You hacked into the network, strike two. SMACK And you intentionally hurt a recruit SMACK SMACK Strike three." "I'm sorry. It won't happen again, sir." "I'm sure it won't. SMACK I'll make sure of it," he said, continuing to rain down the smacks on my helpless butts. Shit I can't help it. My hands fly to my backside, but Ryan quickly removes them, pinning my own hands on my lower back. I fight hard to get away from his grip, but it only results in harder and more smacks. "Would you please stay still? You know you deserve this. SMACK Take your punishment like you are supposed to." "Ow it hurts!" I whine. "Oh, it does? Then I must SMACK be doing a good job SMACK of getting the message across. You don't go ahead and disobey me SMACK SMACK after I give you a direct instruction. You don't SMACK c***k into the network SMACK just because you can. Got it? SMACK" "Yes, sir! I got it." I really AM sorry now. Sorry to the recruit- whether I intended to or not, she ended up breaking her nose because of my action- sorry to Ryan- I hate having Ryan disappointed in me, I hate it when he thinks I am unreliable- and of course...Sorry to Shai- it's my fault she is in this mess, I totally dragged her into this. But I never seem to think of the consequences of my actions until I face them. It's only after my punishment I regret what I did. And I am regretting my actions... NOW... regretting it so freaking much. "I am so sick and tired SMACK SMACK of having to reprimand the two of you SMACK for the same thing over and over again. SMACK Stick to the rules SMACK stick to my words SMACK and stop looking for trouble SMACK" Tears streamed out of my eyes. The pain is unbearable. My behind feels like it's literally set on fire. " Owww Ryan, sir... please stop... I'm really sorry. I really am... I swear I won't disobey you ever again, sir please stop... owww" I say between the smacks, trying hard not to cry out loud in pain. For a moment, I think Ryan is ignoring me, as he keeps smacking me with the paddle. But after good hard five smacks, he finally stops, rubbing my back smoothly. "I guess I'll have to believe you," he matters. "You are not going to be a bratty kid who thinks he can do whatever the heck he wants, am I right? You will not disobey me especially after I give you a specific order , got it?" And of course , he has to smack me again. Whimpering, I say, "Yes sir." Okay, although I do act like one sometimes, I am not a bratty kid. I just don't think when it comes down to causing trouble. I don't think - I act first. But I am really, really sorry now. I swear to God I will stop this pranking tradition. I don't know why I didn't learn this lesson long time ago, but I guess it's because the consequences were never this severe. "Sir , I'm sorry... I won't let it happen again. Can we please call it off? My behind hurts so much," I whine. "We'll call it off after I give you the ten extra smacks I promised you," he said, laying down the paddle on the desk and bringing out the wooden ruler. Oh no. That thing hurts as much as the cane. He starts slapping my thighs and sit spots with the ruler, making me whimper every time that evil thing comes into contact with my poor unprotected behind. "Ow... Owww please stop owww Ryaaaan! OWW!" He remains silent until the eighth smack. "Alright. Last two. Brace yourself," he says. I close my eyes shut, knowing from experience that the last few were always the hardest. The ruler slaps my upper thighs, and then my sit spot immediately after. Then Ryan drops the ruler on the desk, and pulls me into a tight hug. "It stings," I whine. He chuckles softly. "I know it does. So now I can count on you not to disobey me ever again, right?" " Hmmmm... maybe, " I say, grinning. It's okay. We're over with the punishment, and he isn't upset at me anymore. "Maybe?" He raises an eyebrow. "You better not, because then I'll make it feel like a love tap." Ouch, I don't need that. I will do my best not to be on his bad side... for a while. And that reminds me of one last thing I need to deal with. "Um.. Ryan?" I call him quietly. "Yeah?" he answers without any formality in his voice. Ugh, he's such a softie inside. "You know, Shai didn't really do anything... I practically dragged her into this pranking thing... if anything, she only tried to dissuade me from doing it. I don't think she deserves any punishment. The only thing she did was trying to stop me." He pulls away from me, and looks at Shai. "Is that true?" he asks, and she nods, her eyes sparking with hope. "Well, if that's the case, then I don't see any reason to punish you." All of a sudden there is a smile plastered on her face. "But, if you are saying that only to get yourself out of trouble, then help me god, I will s***k the two of you until that ruler breaks," Ryan says firmly. "Awww, impressive threat, Ryan. But the ruler can stay as it is. We ARE telling the truth," Shai says, grinning. "Okay, I believe you. But you do know that if I ever find out you just lied to me, I will follow my words, right?" he replies back, also grinning. Like hell, I do. I believe every word you say, Ryan, and this one is no different. "Oh, and another thing," he adds. "You'll clean up that mess in front of the recruits barrack." We stare at him in disbelief. He shrugs. "Or I can s***k you until you are ready to oblige."
