Chapter 19Kai In the end, it makes no difference; I need him to go. I need him and Franklin out of my house—perhaps forever—so as soon as Toby’s gone, I slam the front door shut and put the extra lock on it by sliding the chain lock into place. What an evening…What a f****d-up evening. At least I’m finally alone, and no one else can hurt me today. I should be relieved, but the solace I experience in my solitude is only short-lived. My apartment is quiet—too quiet—and it’s getting dark already. The sun sets early in February, and eerie shadows are cast across my living room. Normally, it wouldn’t bother me, but I’ve had my share of darkness and silence today, and those shadows give me the creeps. Maybe kicking Toby out wasn’t such a good idea.
