Chapter 8

Katerina After getting out of the shower, I laid in bed and touched my lips. I could feel his lips on mine. It was as if they left a lasting impression. Why did he have to be so charming? Why couldn’t he be a jerk like her so-called ‘intended’? That would make this much easier, I thought to myself. As I was drifting off to sleep the image of his face stayed permanently burned into my memory. “Katerinaaaaaaa.” Shooting up from my sleep I wondered if I was dreaming. Did I really just hear the voice again? Was it him? “Katerinaaaaaaa!” As if hearing it in my sleep was not good enough, I heard it again. I knew, hearing it this time, it was not Alex, it was Alessandro. As confusing as that may seem, they are two different people and from two different times. Getting out of bed, I started plundering through the house. To the left of my room, there was another door. I realized after the fourth time pulling it that it was locked. I remembered the necklace held a key and wondered if it would unlock the door. There was not another lock to be unlocked, so this was my best guess. Squeezing the locket, it popped open again and the key fell to the floor. I picked it up and put it in the lock and it snapped. Earlier in spells and curses class I learned two convenient spells that would come in handy at this moment. Holding my hand over the key, I said aloud, “Repairus”. The key melded back together. Looking at the door I had to try to concentrate all of my energy into the next spell. “Quid Est Aperire Clausa.” The door slung open, almost hitting me in the process. The back of the door contained a painting of a woman. A beautiful woman, that resembled me so much, and yet looked a bit differently. She was much stronger than I was. She had this aura about her that just oozed confidence and demanded respect. It was then that I realized it was me from my past life when I looked at the amulet she wore around her neck. I could not help but to wonder where the necklace came from and why it was given to me. I have had it for as long as I can remember. Looking around the small hidden room, I saw a bunch of dark magic trinkets. “I was into dark magic as Vee previously stated.” I said aloud to myself. Taking a step into the room my body was frozen and my arms outstretched as I was lifted into the air. Almost like a dream, I could see myself as if I were watching television, I saw my dream self, she was in a room in, what looked like, a castle. I then realized it was the Gratu castle. She was waiting for someone, or something. I saw Alex running up to her and just as I saw him, I realized it was Alessandro. He ran up and embraced her so lovingly. For someone as physically powerful as he was, he was so gentle with her. It reminded me of my encounter with Alex earlier that night. “What have you learned since our last meet?” I heard my previous self say. “Nothing more, he is still determined to go through with it, I hate this! He loves her but refuses to drop the engagement. He claims to love you, but I don’t believe it.” Alessandro responded as he began pacing back and forth. “Why can’t we just leave? I am more powerful than them, they couldn’t stop me, they couldn’t stop us.” She said to him as she grabbed his arm to stop him from moving. “My love, you know as well as I,” Alessandro spoke as he pulled his hand up to her face caressing it so lovingly. “With me being the heir to the throne of Vortigen, and you to ascend the throne of your coven on your birth night, after the moon leaves the highest point, we can’t.” He responded matter-of-factly, but I could hear the pain in his voice as he spoke. “We have responsibilities to our people, but these same people forbid our love.” I could see the pain and anger in her eyes. “We will never be allowed to be together so long as we stay here.” She hung her head in defeat as if to give up. I wanted to shout, do not give up, but I did not. Suddenly I dropped to the ground in real time. Lifting myself up, I saw a book that fell when I fell. It was black and made of leather with a symbol of some kind on it. It was G surrounded by a type of star. I picked it up and walked out of the room. As soon as I stepped out of the doorway, the door closed behind me by itself. “That’s not weird at all, completely normal.” I said aloud to myself. I felt for my past self in my previous life. I wondered how much of who I am now and who I used to be, was a part of who I am today. Just as I sat on my couch, there was someone banging on my door. “Katerina! Open the door! Are you alright?” It was Alex, but why was he here again? I unlocked the door and he busted in looking around frantically. “I am fine, but why are you here? Why would you think something would be wrong with me?” “I am not sure; I had a gut feeling and I felt as if you were in some type of danger. It was as if you were scared and I could feel it.” He said as he looked around and then to me noticing that I was perfectly fine he sighed with relief. Just as he sighed with relief, his face turned red with embarrassment. Why was he embarrassed? I realized I was scared with what happened in the room, and being lifted in the air, gaining a vision of the past and he had felt it. How was that possible? “It was nothing I found-” I trailed off as something inside me was telling me not to mention the room or the book. “You found what?” He asked curiously. “Nothing, it was a spider, but what do you mean you felt me?” As he walked closer to me, he responded, “All I know is I felt a sense of fear, and your face came to my mind, I don’t know how I felt you though, I have never drunk from you.” “What? What do you mean?” Drank from me? He feels people he drinks from. For how long, I wondered. Had he drunk from Low-life Lorraine? I felt a tinge of jealousy at the thought. “When we drink from someone, we feel them, we know where they are and what they feel.” “So, you drink from someone and you feel them forever? That seems tiresome.” “No, it doesn’t last forever, unless-” He stopped mid-sentence as if he did not want to finish what he was saying. “Unless…what?” I asked with curiosity. “Unless we share our blood as well. What I mean is, if there is an exchange of blood, there is a permanent bond between us and another person. That hasn’t happened between us.” He looked me over as he spoke as if checking me out and I felt the blood rush to my cheeks. “It normally only happens during a more…intimate moment.” He said as he brushed the hair from my shoulders. Why was he doing this to me? I wanted him with everything I had. I thought about our previous lives and had an epiphany. “Then, maybe, in our previous lives we did.” Just as I blurted it out, I felt embarrassed at what I had said. I wondered what it must have been like to be with Alex in that way. I shook the thought as it came to me. I had never been with anyone, so I did not even know what it would be like in the first place. He was watching me as I was lost in thought and I noticed that he was checking me out in my pajamas. How embarrassing, I thought to myself. “Oh my God! Get out, don’t look at me!” “Why not? I like your night clothes.” He said laughingly, with a smirk on his face. “Why would you do that!?” I yelled as I was trying to push him out. “Why would I do what?” He responded playfully. I was trying to get him out but pushing him was like pushing a mountain. Then I remembered him saying that same thing from my dream after I was brushing the grass from my dress. Was he doing that intentionally? Why was he trying to remind me of that dream? How much did he know? “Oh yeah, I’m a witch.” I said as I smiled at him and spelled him out the house. I leaned on the door as he called in, “I am glad you are okay. That is really what I came for, nothing more.” He said reassuringly, as if he were trying to convince himself. I could not respond, or I would have been tempted to open the door and let him embrace me like in my vision. I shook the thought from my mind, but my heart was still racing. I reached up to my chest, placing my hand over my heart as if I were trying to calm it down. “I am glad to know I have that effect on you.” I heard him laugh as he ran with his super inhuman speed. He really did hear my heart and I could not help that he has that effect on me. He was just so handsome, and my knees grew weak around him. I had not ever felt like this around anyone else and I had yet to understand these feelings for him. All I knew is that I wanted him. Walking back to my bed I laid down, and like the previous night, I felt drained of all energy. I seemed to long for sleep when moments earlier I felt wide awake. I allowed sleep to engulf me and finally I was able to rest. “Katerina! Wake up! Open this door!” I was woken by the sound of my mother dearest screaming like a maniac. I looked at my alarm clock and saw that I still could have slept another hour. Why was she here so early? I had a late morning and Vee was being inconsiderate of my personal space. Walking over to the door I opened it and Vee came bursting in, slamming the door behind her. “What do you think you are doing!?” She asked accusingly. Could she know about what happened with Alex? “Well, before you so rudely interrupted me, I was doing this thing I like to call sleep, maybe you’ve heard of it.” I responded with sarcasm evident in my tone. “Ha-ha, very funny. I am talking about Alessand…Alex. What was he doing here?” I remembered my remarkably interesting encounters with him last night and could not help but smile. The way he felt, the way he smelled, his lips on mine, it was all perfect. I knew I could not very well tell Vee about it. That would be world war three waiting to happen, and it was entirely too early for that. Aside from that, how did she know he was here? “He brought over some notes from class. We are partners and I needed his half of our project to do my half.” It was then that I realized how easy it was to lie to Vee. As I looked in her eyes, though, I knew she did not believe me. “Oh! Okay then. How did you two ends up as partners?” She asked me, raising her brow in curiosity. “We were both late to class yesterday and everyone had already been assigned a partner.” “Okay, well, just try to remember what you are here for.” I thought about my intended and gagged a little. He was not ugly on the outside, but on the inside he was hideous. How could I have ever been prevailed upon him in marriage? Lost in thought for a moment I realized Vee was staring at me. “Are you going to get out, so I can get ready, or what?” I did not intend on snapping at Vee, but something about her rubbed me wrong. Not only that but the fact that she was obviously spying on me made me hesitant to be around her. Something spoke to me and told me not to ask her how she knew he was here. Of everything going on, all of these changes, the one thing I have always done is trust that little voice inside my head. My gut was always right, and I learned to trust in it. “Yeah, I will just speak to you later. Have a good day at school honey!” She responded in a rather fake tone of voice. I could tell she was putting on a show. Maybe she was worried about Alex and me. I realized I had been extremely rude to her as I closed the door. Why was I being like that to Vee? I almost felt as if I was a different person in that moment. It made me wonder if I was a good person in my previous life. Who was I then, and how much of my previous self was I reborn with? Walking up to the school door I noticed Low life Lorraine was standing alone. I hurriedly walked inside hoping she had not seen me. Walking into the library, I felt like a child. Hiding from the big bad bully. Just as I thought Lorraine had not seen me, I turned and noticed that Lorraine was running full speed toward me. I turned fully to face her as Lorraine stopped suddenly inches from me, shouting so loud I did not hear a word she said. “Whoa! What’s the problem?” I asked as I held my hands up in a defensive position. “You know good and well what the problem is you homewrecker!” She spurted at me. She reminded me of a snarling rabid dog. All she was missing was to be foaming at the mouth. “What are you talking about?” I remembered what happened with Alex and felt flushed. He had told her, and she was furious. What I do not understand though, was why she was so upset with me. I was the one who stopped it.
