The document

*Chapter 13: The Document* Mira didn’t sleep. She sat at her kitchen table at 3 AM, the photo on her laptop glowing in the dark. Zain’s signature was clear. Victor’s was already on the page. The date was July 14, 2019. Two months after Zain turned 19. Two months after the shareholder suit was filed. She didn’t know what the document was. The photo was cropped too tight. No header, no footer. Just signatures and a block of legal text she couldn’t read. Her phone buzzed again. Zain: _Mira. Please talk to me._ She didn’t answer. She opened the email metadata instead. Sent from a ProtonMail address created 6 hours ago. No IP trace. Someone who knew what they were doing. Someone who wanted her to doubt Zain. At 7 AM, she walked into the office early. Zain was already there, pacing by her door. When he saw her, he stopped. “You saw it,” he said. Mira nodded. “What is it, Zain?” Zain ran a hand through his hair. “Can we go inside?” Mira opened the office door. Zain closed it behind them and leaned against it, like he was afraid he’d run. “It’s a board resolution,” he said. “From 2019. It approved a $5 million dividend payout to Victor Malik and two other board members.” Mira crossed her arms. “And you signed it?” “I signed it,” Zain said. “Because Dad told me if I didn’t, he’d cut me off. No trust fund, no college tuition, nothing. I was 19. I thought it was just money.” Mira’s stomach dropped. “Was it legal?” Zain hesitated. “It was legal on paper. The company had the cash. But it was a conflict of interest. Dad didn’t disclose that he was on both sides of the transaction.” Mira sat down slowly. “Why didn’t you tell me?” “Because I was ashamed,” Zain said. “And because I thought it was dead. The suit was dismissed. The SEC didn’t care. I thought it was over.” Mira looked at the photo again on her laptop screen. “Who sent this?” “I don’t know,” Zain said. “But I have a guess.” --- Richard Vale called at 9:17 AM. Mira put it on speaker. Zain stood in the corner, arms crossed. “Ms. Hale,” Vale said, voice smooth. “I heard congratulations are in order. IPO’s doing well.” Mira kept her voice flat. “What do you want, Mr. Vale?” Vale chuckled. “I want what we all want. A clean exit. I’m offering to buy your shares. All of them. At a 15% premium to today’s price.” Mira glanced at Zain. His face was stone. “Not interested,” Mira said. Vale sighed. “I was afraid you’d say that. Then I suppose I’ll have to go public with the other documents.” Mira’s grip tightened on the phone. “What other documents?” “Board minutes. Email chains. Proof that your COO signed off on a conflicted transaction and hid it from the SEC,” Vale said. “It won’t kill the company, Ms. Hale. But it’ll kill your reputation. And his.” Mira looked at Zain. He gave a small nod. “Send them,” Mira said. Vale paused. “Excuse me?” “Send them,” Mira repeated. “To the SEC. To the board. To the press, if you want. Do it now. Because if you’re going to burn this down, I want it to happen in daylight.” Vale was quiet for a long time. Then he hung up. Mira set the phone down and exhaled. “You just called his bluff,” Zain said quietly. Mira shook her head. “It wasn’t a bluff. He has the documents. But he doesn’t have a story unless we give him one.” Zain frowned. “What does that mean?” Mira stood up. “It means we tell the story first.” --- The press conference was at 2 PM. Mira stood at the podium alone. Zain was in the back, per legal’s advice. “Ladies and gentlemen,” Mira said, “I want to address a document that will be made public later today.” The room went quiet. “In 2019, when Zain Malik was 19 years old, he signed a board resolution approving a dividend payout that included his father, Victor Malik. That resolution was legal, but it was a conflict of interest. Zain signed it because he was told his tuition and livelihood depended on it.” Murmurs rippled through the room. “Zain did not hide this from me,” Mira continued. “He told me last night. We reported it to the SEC this morning. We are amending our disclosures and cooperating fully.” A reporter shouted, “Does this make him unfit to be COO?” Mira looked straight at the camera. “No,” she said. “It makes him human. He was 19. He made a mistake under duress. He’s spent the last four years making it right. If you have a problem with that, you don’t understand what accountability looks like.” She stepped back from the podium. No questions. The room was silent. --- The market dipped 3% at 2:05 PM. By 4 PM, it had recovered. Elena found Mira in her office at 5 PM. “That was reckless,” Elena said. Mira looked up. “It worked.” Elena sighed. “It worked this time. Next time, talk to me before you go nuclear on live TV.” Mira nodded. “Noted.” Elena hesitated. “For what it’s worth… your father would’ve done the same thing.” Mira looked up at that. Elena left without another word. --- Zain found her on the roof at 7 PM. The city was lit up below them. “You didn’t have to defend me like that,” he said. Mira shrugged. “Yes, I did.” Zain sat next to her. “Vale’s not done. He sent the documents to the SEC and the board. We’ll have hearings. Investigations.” Mira nodded. “I know.” Zain looked at her. “Are you mad at me?” Mira thought about it. “Yesterday, yes,” she said. “Today, no. You told me. That matters more than the signature.” Zain let out a breath he’d been holding for 12 hours. Mira bumped his shoulder. “Don’t do it again.” Zain smiled, small and tired. “No more secrets.” Mira looked out at the city. “Good. Because we have bigger problems.” Zain followed her gaze. “Like what?” Mira pulled up her phone. Vale’s number was calling again. She answered on speaker. “Ms. Hale,” Vale said. “I admire your nerve. But you missed one thing.” Mira frowned. “What?” “The shareholder who filed the 2019 suit,” Vale said. “He didn’t act alone. He had a backer. Someone who’s still invested in Hale-Malik.” Mira’s blood went cold. “Who?” she asked. Vale smiled, even though she couldn’t see it. “Check your board roster, Ms. Hale,” he said. “And enjoy your night.” The line went dead. Mira looked at Zain. “Elena,” they said at the same time.
