"My lord, they're gone."
For the first time in years, Thomas froze. His blood turned cold and his eyes, fluttered in surprise. Gone where? Coming to the Castle? Surely, she was on her way to the Castle, to be his wife today? He had made them arrange everything to her taste, he had made sure the ring was back to how it was years ago when it hung on the Golden Dragoness fingers. He had prepared her room and cleaned the crown. What was all this?
"Get the hall ready. She'll arrive soon then."
Thomas refused to accept what this servant of his meant. The servant started shaking, he knew it was going to be hard to break this news to the king but he didn't know it was going to be this bad!
"Sire.."
The king didn't bother answering. Thomas was conflicted. He felt his insides, coiling in anger and..hurt. Surely, she didn't leave him.
"My lord, he means they have left Gravenhurst. "
The servant was relieved to hear Lockhart's voice do the explanation. He felt the heavy weight, lift off his shoulders.
The room was quiet not a sound could be heard. Lockhart braced himself for the worst. So did the rest of the castle members, who also heard of the sad news.
Thomas felt weak. He felt his legs, slowly giving him away. He quickly dragged the chair and sat down trying hard to suppress his emotions that seemed everywhere in his body. He could feel his breath becoming hotter and hotter. This wasn't good for him. He couldn't afford to burn the whole village again. He poured himself a glass of water and gulped it down in three sips. Then he added another and another till the jug became empty.
His breath was still warm, but he was a lot cooler now.
"Lockart?" The King called.
Lockhart immediately answered. "Yes, sire?"
"Prepare the soldiers. Get my battle suit ready."
Lockhart was confused. Was a war waged against them? But his questions was soon answered by the king.
"We're raiding the whole villages in Gravenhurst. No soldier is to sleep a wink unless we find her. No one."
That was it then, their king had gone crazy!
Lockhart had never seen Thomas act like that. He wanted to ask so many questions but he knew better than to talk to the king at that minute about anything less important.
"As you command, your lordship."
Thomas didn't turn as he heard Lockhart's footstep retreat. He was confused about how he was feeling about her departure. Thomas scolded himself. He had scared her. He should have known, that lust couldn't keep a woman. Neither did fear!
The golden Dragoness advised him to tame her heart and he barely managed to do exactly that. He scared her heart! The king had a lot of frustration pent up. Even his dragon was aware now that she left. Did she know what that meant? To refuse your mates hand and run? He knew her mother had something to do with this! All these meant she didn't want to be mates.
Thomas was on the edge now. He knew she would be hurting too, so will he. His was going to be a lot worse than hers. He could already feel his aching heart twist in hurt, his knees, weakening, as a result of low strength. She is his strength and she left him. The feeling was indescribable. She is his saving grace after all. He needed her. He had to find her, fast.
Thomas left his study, making his way to the stables. He was pleased to see that his horse was already ready and his scared soldiers, trying to stand straight as he approached. He didn't mind them, not even as they bowed. His mind was thinking about his mate. He was really not going to spear her when he finds her. He would mate with her the minute he finds her, he promised himself.
Lockhart bought the King's Riding and Battle gear. The king wore it before climbing on his horse and riding fast, with Lockhart's horse beside his.
"My lord, Anne has a friend, Nadia. Her daughter is also friends with Danny, Nadia's daughter. Why don't we check there first, see if she has ideas?" Lockhart advised.
Thomas little finger twitched, in anticipation. He gave Lockhart a stiff nod. It wasn't quiet, not when some horses were galloping, others were neighing and some soldiers were walking briskly.
Lockhart smiled, at the thought of seeing his beloved today. His own mate. When they reached the market square, they easily found her house. Lockhart knocked, while Thomas remained on his horse, proud and tall, looking angry and handsome as ever.
The door opened with a middle aged woman with black hair. Her eyes widened when she pieced two and two together. She immediately curtsied.
"My lord."
Thomas looked at her. Her curtesy was poor, her house looked as if it would fall on their heads any minute but that wasn't why he was here. He was here for his mate.
"Anna, where is she?" His icy tone asked.
The king watched the slow change of emotions that crossed her face. He watched guilty and a pleading face. She knew where they were. Thomas got off his horse and approached her.
"Rise. "
She lifted herself up but still didn't look at the king. She didn't have the courage too. Another figure came in the doorway, a reflection of the woman in front of him.
"My king." She curtsied too and rose. "Belle isn't here."
Thomas's eyes immediately looked at her. He knew why she was here. That was just what he needed.
"Then where is she?"
Danny looked at her mother who still didn't look at the king. That meant her mother knew where they went too.
"Where are they?" He asked in a hard tone again. Nadia shook from the intensity of his words. She couldn't tell him, Anna made her promise that.
Danny spoke up. "My lord, we don't know ourselves. All we do know is that they left in the wee hours of morn. Belle said something about leaving Gravenhurst, but that's it."
Thomas stared at her, with a mix of hate and anger. He was immensely angry at everything that was happening around him. The reason for all these is his mate!
Thomas itched to scream and shout, but he couldn't. He felt his heart beating faster, his temperature rising. He could afford to burn this whole place down with his fire.
"Water." He croaked.
Lockhart understood, he immediately entered the household in search of water. In less than a minute, he brings the king the water, who gulps it down.
His people remain quiet, knowing their king. The king said nothing, he slipped on his horse and started riding, not even a word of farewell.
Nadia let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. Her eyes brought out water. Danny was concerned too.
"Anna had done it this time. She didn't think the king would look for them."
Danny nodded. "The king is angry. Where did they go mama?" Danny was curious where they went.
Nadia shook her head. "Not where they went. Where they're planning to go. Let's hope he doesn't find out. If not.."
Danny's interest was peeked! What were they hiding? When she was sure her mother wasn't going to continue, she pushed further.
"Find out what exactly?"
Nadia shook her head and went inside. "I can't tell you Danny. I swore, I promised. Now, drop it."
Danny hummed. "Is it really that dangerous?"
"Yes."
**********
Thomas was tired of riding. He was tired of not getting anywhere. It was nightfall, his men were all tired, he felt their low energy. Even lockhart was tired, but he chose to say naught.
"We spend the night here, we continue by morn." He commanded.
Signs of relief could be heart among the men. Some went immediately to the stream nearby for a drink, others went in search of animals, for their empty stomachs behind the kings back. They couldn't kill themselves for a mere girl!
The king secluded himself. He went past the stream and found a dark cave. His eyes immediately adjusted to an enhanced level. He saw the cave as clear as crystal now.
Then and there, Thomas decided to let his dragon out. He felt his bone cracking, his skin replaced by scales, his breaths, coming out in puffs of smoke, his eyes, becoming clearer as his yellow eyes became green.
It's been long since he changed, but then, he was used to the pain. There was no pain for him.
The dragon wagged it's tail. It was happy, after years, it had freedom it was entitled to. The dragon flew out of the cave, flying high above the sky.
The houses became smaller. Thomas didn't know why he changed and decided to fly, but Lockhart, who heard the flapping of the dragon wings of the king, decided to look. Even in Lockhart's dream, he couldn't mistake the green dragon for anyone else. Only King Thomas had a black dragon, the rest of them were either green or maroon. He knew the king had gone in search for Belle.
If anything, the dragon would sense the presence of Belle anywhere. He was sure that by now, it could detect her scent. He watched the dragon fly miles apart.
Thomas scanned the area with his extraordinary eyes, hoping to see her. His sense of smell was also hightened, in preparation for finding his loved one.
After minutes of flying, there was no sign of her. He almost gave up but his urge and need to see her was relentless. He kept going and going.
Just before he decided to give up, he caught her scent, the scent of lemon in an area. He knew that place, this was his neighbouring state. He was confused why she was there. The state was called the Northern pack. The people there were werewolves. The alpha there is Alpha Devon. It was an open secret that the Northern pack didn't welcome strangers, especially humans since his mate died. Then how did Belle manage to enter the pack? There was no way they would invade the premises and not be detected.
Thomas wasn't happy. The werewolves weren't friends with the Dragons. He couldn't proceed to take her away.
This was really puzzling for Thomas. He felt his dragons heart twist in ache. His dragon wasn't happy too. Since Thomas couldn't proceed with his plan to get her back, he decided to go back to where his people were camping, which was miles from here.
As he flew, he kept thinking about the odds of them being kidnapped. This couldn't be a kidnapping, it was too much of a coincidence, just after he declared his intentions to .army her, she gets kidnapped?
His dragon wings flapped angrily in the air, taking him back to his destination. The farther he got, the more his heart ached.
He reached the cave after some time and found his people sound asleep, except for Lockhart, who stood in a stance, waiting for him.
Thomas said nothing, he was angry. He changed to his human form and slipped on his clothes.
"I go back to the Palace today. You and the soldiers should follow in the morn."
Lockhart could see the hurt on his masters face. He didn't know how to console him. Lockhart didn't know what was wrong, but he knew things didn't go as planned.
Just before the king climbed on his saddle, Lockhart spoke.
"No mate is able to survive without the other, my Lord. She can't deny it, her body, will not be able to handle it. "
Thomas gave him a sideways glance. "So, what will happen Lockhart?"
Thomas's voice was eerily quiet, as usual, only this time, Lockhart could hear the helplessness in it.
"She'll come back to you My lord. Be patient."
