CHAPTER Six Stepping inside, the entire place was swallowed in darkness. Marcus had already locked the door behind me, and my heart began to race as I held my baby tighter to my chest, an irrational fear gripping me, as if the dark itself might reach out and snatch him away. My thoughts spiraled, uncertainty clawing at me. Had I trusted too easily? Had I just endangered not only myself, but my son as well? I stood frozen. Then I heard the doorknob turn. I spun around, panic surging, only to see Marcus step back inside. “Sorry,” he said. “I forgot to lead you in.” He flicked on the hallway lights, and the house slowly revealed itself. Marble floors stretched beneath my feet, spotless and gleaming. A massive elevator stood at the center of the space, leading to the upper levels. Everything about the place was excessive, far beyond anything I could have imagined. This was not the home of an ordinary man. Whoever the Alpha was… he had to belong to one of the wealthiest packs. There was no other explanation. “This way,” Marcus said, motioning for me to follow. We stepped into the elevator. He pressed the button for the third floor, and moments later the doors slid open to a long corridor lined with doors. Too many doors. Confusion crept in. Was this truly a house, or something closer to a private hotel? Marcus walked toward the far end of the hall and stopped at a black door. He pushed it open. Inside was a king sized mahogany bed with a canopy, matching furniture, and a large black rug that softened the room. A flat screen television was built into the wall. One door led to a balcony, and another, clearly the bathroom, sat opposite it. “Obviously, I don’t have a crib,” Marcus said, “but the bed is comfortable. The bathroom is just there. You can get some fresh air on the balcony if you want, though the AC is working fine if it won’t affect your son.” He paused, then added, “The Alpha’s room is next door, but he’s out of the city on personal business. Towels are in the bathroom. I’ll check on you at eight in the morning. Make yourself comfortable no one will disturb you.” He turned toward the door, then stopped. “The kitchen is downstairs. You can fix yourself something. I’m running late.” With that, he left. I stood still for a moment, scanning the room, listening for anything out of place. When nothing felt wrong, I gently laid my son on the bed. “This is nice, Aurelian,” I whispered. “Looks like we’ll sleep comfortably for the first time in a while.” A strange sense of excitement stirred in my chest. After Aurelian drifted off, I decided to take a quick shower. The moment I stepped into the bathroom, I gasped. Everything about it felt regal, gray tiles lined the walls and floor, accented with ash toned finishes. One entire wall was mirrored above the sink, and the shower was large enough to fit several people at once. There was even a bathtub. What struck me most, though, was the sink. It was the perfect size to bathe Aurelian. He hadn’t had a proper bath since the hospital. I smiled softly, thinking he would love it, though he was fast asleep now. Then I heard him cry. Fear seized me instantly. I rushed out of the bathroom, heart pounding, terrified someone had come to take him. But he was only fussing his tiny fingers tangled in the towel beside him. I laughed quietly at myself as I freed his hand. He settled immediately, drifting back to sleep. Leaving the bathroom door open so I could hear him, I returned inside. I stripped quickly and stepped under the warm spray. I washed myself thoroughly, savoring the warmth, the soap, the simple luxury of being clean. When I finished, I sank into the bathtub. Not to soak my body ..but my soul. I didn’t know if we would still be here tomorrow. It felt safer to enjoy this moment before it could be taken away. I was lost in thought when Aurelian cried again. I climbed out of the tub, wrapped a towel around myself, and hurried to him. After feeding him, I decided to give him a bath. I filled the sink with warm water and gently lowered him in, supporting his head carefully. His arms and legs moved happily, splashing the water as soft murmurs escaped his lips. I chuckled, watching him play. Once the water cooled, I lifted him out, wrapped him in a towel, and dried him before dressing him and laying him back on the bed. I lay beside him, playing softly until he drifted off again, peaceful, as though he knew he was safe. “Thank you for staying with me through those hard moments,” I whispered. “Mummy promises you’ll sleep comfortably from now on.” Sleep claimed me before I realized it. --- Morning came without warning. It had been so long since I slept well that I didn’t even realize how deeply I’d rested. Even Aurelian hadn’t woken for food through the night. Tap. Tap. Tap. “Wake up. Breakfast is ready.” Marcus’s voice stirred me. I opened my eyes slowly as sunlight streamed into the room, forcing them shut again. I stretched gently. “I’m coming down soon,” I called. When my eyes finally adjusted, I felt… alive. Energized. A tear slipped down my cheek before I could stop it. Careful not to wake Aurelian, I slipped into the bathroom for a quick shower, then headed downstairs. “Hope you slept well?” Marcus asked when he saw me. “Yes. Thanks to you,” I replied. “When did you get back?” “About three hours ago,” he said. “I figured you and your baby needed the rest.” The dining table was already set. We ate quietly. If I was being honest, Marcus wasn’t a bad cook. Halfway through the meal, a thought struck me , and my spoon slipped from my hand. “What’s wrong?” he asked. “Don’t you like the food?” “No,” I said quickly, smiling. “It’s great. Better than mine, actually.” “Then why did you stop eating?” I hesitated. “How long can I stay here?” He looked at me carefully. “Do you have anywhere else to stay, besides sleeping in your car with your baby?” “No.” “Then you can stay for a week, at most, before my Alpha returns,” he said calmly. “But only if you’re willing to work. Know your place, and you can stay.” Relief flooded me. “I can work,” I said quickly. “Any kind of work.” “I manage the house, I'm a Beta and my Alpha is the owner ” Marcus explained. “You’ll help keep it clean. Laundry gets sent out, and cooking isn’t required, my Alpha rarely comes home, and so do I. The pay won’t be bad.” “Yes,” I said immediately. “I can do it. Please.” “Just don’t overwork yourself,” he added. “That’s the fastest way to get on my Alpha’s bad side.” “I’ll behave,” I promised. He nodded. “Good. And your baby?” “Asleep. He seems to be enjoying his—” Aurelian’s cry cut me off. I smiled despite myself.
