Chapter Three

1075 Words
It’s too much effort to get ready. Binder, boots, baggy clothing, mask, as well as makeup. It drives me insane that only men are accepted into this work. So, I need to become Scar Delfino. I’ll do anything to go out on the field and show my father that women can go on jobs too. It’s lonely being an only child. Sometimes I wish I really did have a twin brother to play with. My father was busy a lot when I was growing up. I love remembering all the times Aaron and I would meet up, have playdates, train together. They truly were the best years of my life, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I walk to my dresser and open the top drawer, I move some towels over and open a box. I grab my hand pistol and slide it inside my holster. I took my pocket knife and put it in my pocket. I shut the box and hide it back under the towels and shut the drawer, the bedroom door opens, and I turn over nervously. I saw Nicolas walk in. “Oh, you’re already leaving?” He asks. “Yes, father has a new job. I already did the research.” “Be careful, remember this isn't a place for women.” He placed his hand on my shoulder. I couldn’t help but feel his condescending tone. “When I take over the Sicilian mafia, it will be. Mark my words on that, Nicolas.” “Don’t be too sure, I am the underboss dear.” I don’t know what makes him think he can have the mafia, it will be mine. “I am the only child. I know I’ll be more than capable when I am older, with training, of course. The underboss can only go to a family member, and you’re the only other one we have.” I go to leave the room and as I pass him, he grabs my arm. “Keep your attitude in check, Scar. Your father will see this isn’t a job for women.” I pulled my arm away and looked up at him, his face looked cold. I can’t stand being belittled by my gender and he knows this. I cross my arms and looked up meeting his gaze. "Remember, I'll make you pay one day." I said convictingly. "Pay for what?" He laughs, almost mocking me. "For killing my mother!" I yelled at him. He pushed me to the wall. He pins me down, covering my mouth. "Say that louder b***h, I don't think my little brother heard!" He smirked. Every day it's the same with Nicolas. Do what he asks, or he'll reveal my relationship. "Now, are you going to be good today?" He has cameras everywhere. I can never get away. I nodded, he released my hands. I run out the door and towards the stairs. I walked towards the stairs, I head down and saw my father walking out the door. I followed him and shut it behind me. I notice him and Aaron loading up the car. Aaron looks annoyed, but I know it's towards Scar, not Scarletta. He looked forward at me and I walked towards the car. I clear my throat before speaking. “Hey, is everything prepared?” I cross my arms and ensure my voice is lowered enough. “Yes Scar. Your father gave me your list.” He shuts the trunk and walks towards the driver-side door. He must still be angry about the comment my father made about his dad. He opens the door, gets in and shuts it without another word. I walked to the rear door behind him and open it. I climbed inside and shut the door. I need to break this awkward silence, he just keeps glaring at me through the rearview mirror. But those eyes are just so beautiful, I could stare into them all day. “Thanks for getting Scarletta home.” I clear my throat after speaking, it hurts to lower my voice. “Would have been nice to have you there to assist, but it’s fine. I handled it like the other times.” “Is there a problem, Aaron? I have my own duties to handle.” “Thought your sister's safety would be a priority. Your father always says family above all.” Suddenly the passenger door swings open, and my father sticks his head in. “Aaron, we discussed this issue. Remember your place, you are fourth down the line. Below the men in my family.” Aaron let out a sigh. “Yes sir, I’m sorry.” “That's twice you need to apologize within an hour. I am not light on warnings Aaron.” He gets in the car. “I understand, I will never depict your son's actions again or undermine him for doing his own duties. I’m sorry Scar.” He looked in the rearview mirror again. “Apology accepted, let’s finish up, so we can head back home.” Aaron nods and moves the gear shift and begins to drive. “Hand me the GPS, I can plug in the location.” My father hands me the GPS, I out a scrap paper from my pocket and begin typing the address on it. “The gang is about no larger than 10 members, it seems like a new start-up. Their product is great quality, and we need it to sell it.” “Don’t kill on sight unless it's necessary. I want to attempt to recruit them. You can never have too many members.” “Understood.” Aaron replied. I hand the GPS back to my father and Aaron begins following it. I lean my head on the side of the door and look out the window. I might really be pushing Aaron's buttons with Scar, but I have to create this whole different persona and keep it up. My father is right, only men are taken seriously. Women are only seen as weaknesses and I will not end up like my mother. But I believe in myself to make a change around here. It just takes a few baby steps. First, I need Scar to overtake Nicolas as the underboss. After that, I expose him as the mastermind he is. That is honestly a challenge on its own, but lucky for me. I love a good challenge.
