“Why is your arm around my daughter?” His stare changed to a glare and I looked at my shoulder. I didn’t notice his arm was around me. I just felt so safe and comfortable.
“My mistake sir. She seemed a bit nervous. I dealt with the man, he’s dead.” Aaron removes his arm quickly and hands the hospital bill over to my father.
“Hm, remember hands off my daughter unless necessary.” He takes the hospital bill and keeps a glare on him.
“Father, can we go?” I ask, and his voice turns on a dime. It's like my father had two different personalities. With his men, he was cold, heartless, ruthless. However, with me, he's kind, loving, protective. I've seen all sides of him.
“Of course dear, come.” He holds me close and gives me a big hug. He kissed my forehead.
“Father, I’m used to this by now.” He looked over my arms for injuries.
“I knew it was a bad idea to announce my famous mafia twins, now you're always a target. And I’m sorry, no child should ever get used to being taken by strange men, but we always find you thanks to Aaron’s idea of putting that tracker in your boot heel.” We start walking to the car and Aaron follows us. “Aaron, I’ll need you to drive her home. I need to meet with Scar before tonight's trip.”
“Yes sir. I understand.” Aaron takes out some car keys as he passes us.
“You weren’t scared, right?” My father looked at me.
“No father, I used my lighter to escape. He shot at me, but I used some barrels as cover. He overpowered me, but Aaron came in just in time and shot him in the head.” My father smiled approvingly.
“He’s just like his dad, I trust him as much as your uncle Nicholas, not yet but almost.” I smiled at him and looked towards Aaron in front. Everything about him is just perfect, the way his long black hair flows in the wind. His beautiful brown eyes and his smile is just amazing. I can’t imagine a better man, as much as it drives me nuts when he comments about how he towers over me. However, comparing him to Nicolas is an insult.
Arriving home feels so surreal, but I’m just happy to be back. My father followed closely behind Aaron and I. We ensured to keep at least 4 feet between us.
“Alright. Let’s get ready for tonight. Aaron, load the car, I’ll get Scar.” My father says, his voice gets cold when he’s serious.
“Father, I can go too. I’m just as capable as Scar.”
“No, we agreed our work isn’t made for women. I will NOT have a repeat of what happened to your mother.” I hung my head and my father put his hand on my shoulder. “Look, I’m sorry. But you know I don’t like being the bad guy to you, but I’m putting my foot down. Besides, I have all the security to protect you in this house.”
“I-it’s fine, I understand father.” I started walking away.
“Make sure to check in with a nurse to make sure you don’t have any bad injuries.” His voice shifts back.
“Yea, I’ll get on that.” As I walked up the stairs, I heard the murmurs from Aaron and my father behind me, but I kept walking. I get to the top and peak around the corner subtly to eavesdrop.
“Now Aaron, we will need different firearms for tonight. I am bringing as few men as possible to avoid getting caught. It will just be you, Scar and myself.” I heard my father say.
“Yes sir, will Nicholas be joining us?”
“No, he will be here ensuring Scarlet is protected. So I’m bringing my two next best men.”
“Understood. Sir, I don’t mean to overstep by asking, but where was Scar earlier?”
“He was scouting and researching for our job. Why?”
“It just seems weird, he never shows up or comes to attempt to help his own sister.”
“Aaron, Scar has other duties. He is next in line after Nicolas.”
“His own sister is in trouble, and he seems to put everything else above her.”
“Aaron! This conversation is over. You do not depict my son’s actions. I know the reasoning and there are other things to worry about. I don't send every man who works for me on a mission. So I don’t need to send Scar out when it isn’t needed. Just because your father was my best friend, doesn’t mean you get a free pass to my good books.” His voice immediately shifted to stern, cold and angry. I do miss Luca, he was even better than uncle Nicolas.
“I understand, I’m sorry for overstepping. Respectfully, please don’t drag my father’s name into a conversation between us.”
“Get the things and start the car, I’m getting Scar.” My father storms towards the stairs, I tuck back around the corner, he turns the corner and stares at me right in the eye. “Eavesdropping seems a little rude, Scarletta. I saw you out of the corner of my eye, just a point. Don’t stick your head out so much, with your red highlights, it is very noticeable." He isn't wrong, my hair used to be midnight black, but after my mother was killed, I dyed the red highlights more for her than for me.
“Father?” I asked nervously. I played with my hair as I prepared to ask, as I could tell he already knew what I was about to ask him. “Can we come clean to Aaron? It seems-” He cuts me off.
“No, no one can know. We don’t know who we can trust. The less who knows, the better. Now go change.” I absolutely hate keeping secrets, it makes my gut turn. My father is right though. The less one who knows, the better and it goes both ways. I know I need to listen to my father. He is more intelligent than me. I trust him more than Aaron. He’s done nothing but be a loving father and protect me from the world. Sicily is not a perfect paradise. It's taken years, but it’s completely owned by my father. He knows everything that goes on, and when anyone attempts to make a new group on his land, they will pay the price for undermining him.
“I understand. I just want to make you proud.” I looked up at him, meeting his gaze.
“I’m always proud of you princess, that's why I trained you myself. I’ll meet you outside.” With that, he kissed my forehead and walked downstairs. I turned on my heels and walked to my room to prepare.
