By all accounts, after the manner in which Austria led them by the nose and deeply disappointed their expectations, the Slavic tribes have become entirely alienated from that country. After their occupation and subsequent ill-treatment, a savage hatred amongst other nations was aroused by Austria on account of the countless solemn vows she proclaimed, which later were never fulfilled. Besides this, another aggravating circumstance was the increase of existing taxes, and the introduction of new, burdensome ones, collected with no respect for the private property of individuals. And yet Austria’s national debt continues steadily to rise, with quarterly increases, in the face of a lack of government credit — all these deficits despite the swelling taxes.
