Scarlet's POV:
"What did you say, Harriet?" I asked, sitting up on my bed.
"That... there is a rumour, my lady. About... about a girl... that the king brought to the pack," Harriet stammered, kneeling before me.
Standing up, I asked, "The king brought a girl to the pack?"
"Yes, my lady."
"And where is this girl?"
"She's in the underground room."
I walked around my room slowly, processing the information my personal helper had just shared.
The king isn't one to bring just any woman to the palace. If he did that... then it means she's important to him. The question now is: *How* important is this woman to him?
I can't have any lady becoming so important to him.
"And what do these rumours say about who she might be to the king?"
"That she might be his Luna," Harriet replied, staring down at her feet.
What? Luna??
No one owns that position except me. I am to be his next Luna, and no one else.
"Take me to her," I instructed, already walking out the door of my chamber.
"But... the king specifically ordered that no one should go there," Harriet protested, running after me.
"Well... my dear Harriet, I am not 'no one.' And what? It's not like he would kill me," I responded, walking even faster.
"Of course not, but he would kill ‘me’," she cried out.
I halted and turned around to stare at her.
"Oh, my goodness, thank you, my lady. Now, please, let's head back before anyone sees us," she said hastily, beckoning me with her hand.
"I stopped because I do not know which turn to take next. Harriet, you have to be in front of me."
"What?" she exclaimed, surprised.
"Come on, lead the way," I said, giving her a slight nudge on the shoulder.
"Yes, my lady," she replied, shaking her head. "I celebrated too quickly."
Harriet walked in front of me, leading me to the unknown girl's room.
We passed through a long hallway, then a flights of stairs leading to the underground. Harriet finally stopped in front of a door and turned to me. "This is her room, my lady."
Without any sort of hesitation, I barged into the room, opening the door wide. "So—" The words I was about to say got caught in my throat. Why?
I was caught off guard by her beauty. Who in the world has white hair and eyes... ocean-blue eyes? She had all the right curves in the right places, and overall... she looked like a goddess.
"Don't tell me you're smitten by her beauty, because I am too," Harriet whispered to me.
"Who are you? And why are you in my room?" the unknown lady asked, her eyes staring at me intently. I felt intimidated.
What? This is supposed to be the other way around. I am supposed to be intimidating her!
"Scarlet, King Wilder's fiancée. Soon-to-be Luna of the Nightshade Pack," I answered, standing tall and appearing confident.
The lady folded her arms beneath her chest, her eyes taking in my entire length as she walked over to me in slow, threatening steps. "So?" she asked, her demeanour calm.
"Excuse me? So??" I exclaimed, surprised by her nonchalant attitude. "How dare you—"
"LISTEN HERE!" she yelled in my face, cutting me off. "I don't care who you are to Wilder Reagan. But you see, I plan to have s*x with him in the near future. And you are not coming between that."
*s*x? What in the world is she saying?*
"Are you out of your mind? You… you… want to have s*x with my fiancé?" I stuttered, still unable to process the words she was sprouting.
"Yes. And that is why you can't be his fiancée," she responded simply.
"How dare you!" I yelled, raising my hand to slap her, but she was quick to catch my wrist.
I staggered backward. I gasped in shock as I watched her head lit up in blue fire. She walked towards me in slow steps, and I moved back even more, tripping and falling to the ground.
"My lady," Harriet called out, trying to help me to my feet.
"Step away from her!" the lady ordered in a loud voice, her hands lighting up in blue flames, just like her head. Harriet moved away in fear.
The lady lowered herself before me, her burning face right in front of mine. She tutted, "Tell me, what should I do with you?"
"What?" I gasped, my chest heaving up and down rapidly.
"You see, Scarlet..." she drawled, caressing my hair softly. I stared at her with rapt attention, shocked that her blue fire wasn't burning my hair or producing any sort of heat. "I do not like to share what is mine. And Wilder Reagan is mine."
"Let's go, my lady," Harriet said hurriedly, helping me up, and together we ran out of the room.
"That girl is sick! She's sick!" I shrieked as we walked up the stairs.
"She's sick and frightful," Harriet agreed, walking hastily behind me.
She must be joking! Wilder Reagan is hers? Who the hell decided that?
I will make that blue-eyed witch regret crossing me , even if it means I will have to play dirtier.
"I need you to get me information on her. I need every single detail, Harriet. Leave nothing out," I instructed, and she nodded. "Yes, my lady."
"I will go see the king, so be on your way," I informed her.
"Of course— what! You want to see the king?" she questioned, halting in shock.
"Yes, I need to know my position isn't being threatened by some unknown girl," I responded, already walking in the direction of the throne room.
"Uhm... I don't really think—"
"Then don't think, Harriet. Just do what I instructed you to do."
She stared at me with uncertainty, then bowed and said, "Yes, my lady,”
She walked in the opposite direction, while I continued my journey to the throne room.
My legs trembled as I approached the throne. I dreaded meeting the monster seated on that cursed throne, but still— I have to. My future is at stake; the future of my people is at stake.
It was bad enough that one monster ruled over my people; I couldn’t allow another monster become their queen.
"What do you want, Scarlet?" King Wilder asked, staring down at me from his throne with those lifeless eyes of his.
Why won't he just give in to the wolves inside him and die?
"Who is she?" I asked, standing at a distance from his throne. For years, I had acted as though I wasn't afraid of him, but I was. I feared Wilder Reagan.
And for years, I thought I was the only one who could stand in his presence. But I was wrong. There's an unknown girl who is somehow in love with him.
I thought I had no competitor. Why? Because King Wilder is nothing but a monster.
"There are a lot of 'she's' in my palace. You don't somehow think that I know all of them, do you?" he said, sitting up straight on his throne. "Be specific, Scarlet. I have somewhere to be."
"The one I presume you are about to go meet. The girl under—"
I gasped in shock, stumbling backward in fright. Wilder had super-sped to where I stood, shocking the daylight out of me.
"The girl underground is none of your business, Scarlet," he growled.
Calming my nerves, I stared him in the eye... my fingers clutching the sides of my dress. "It is my business if she claims the man I am to marry belongs to her."
"She said that?" he asked, chuckling.
What? Did he just laugh?
"Yes," I answered, staring at him fiercely. Although, I knew he could see through my façade.
"Hmm. Well... it is still none of your business, Scarlet. If you don't want to get killed, then I advise you to stop being curious," he said, staring at me intently. "And believe me, this time around... I won't be the one doing the killing." He cackled softly, then walked past me, heading for the doors.
"YOU SAID I WOULD BE YOUR LUNA!" I shouted at the top of my voice, my chest heaving. He turned around, and I whispered, "You promised."
He grinned. "I guess promises are meant to be broken." With that, he left.
Promises are meant to be broken? Not if I have anything to say about it.
