Chapter 22 Tomorrow. Alex was leaving the country tomorrow. The countdown had been blinking in Damian’s brain like a bomb timer all month, and the numbers glared brighter that morning. Today Alex would arrive in Rancho Amantes to drop off most of his possessions at his family’s house and visit them. He’d see Damian, too—which was all that mattered. Seeing past that meeting to the departure of Alex’s flight to Switzerland was almost impossible, like imagining the afterlife. As Damian shoveled compost out of the truck and onto the heap behind one of the sheds, he grimaced. It wasn’t as dramatic as all that. It was only that he didn’t know yet what the next year would bring. All he knew was it wouldn’t contain nearly as much of Alex as he’d grown used to. Which sucked, no getting around it
