The Girl Who Knew Too Much
Elara Vale had never felt unsafe in her life.
Silvercrest City was clean, bright, and protected by money and influence. Her family name opened doors everywhere. She attended one of the most prestigious high schools in the city, where nothing truly bad was supposed to happen.
That all changed the night she saw Lucian Blackthorne.
She stood by her bedroom window the morning after, watching sunlight creep over the rooftops as if everything were normal. But inside her chest, fear sat like a heavy stone. The image of the rain-soaked mansion, the low voices, and the sharp look in Lucian’s eyes refused to leave her mind.
He hadn’t looked cruel.
He had looked… alarmed.
At school, Elara tried to pretend nothing was wrong. She smiled at friends, nodded at teachers, and walked through the halls as if she wasn’t carrying a dangerous secret. But every step felt shaky, like she was walking on thin ice.
Then she felt it.
Someone was watching her.
She glanced toward the school gates and saw him.
Lucian stood across the street, dressed in dark clothes that made him blend into the crowd, yet he somehow stood out. His posture was calm, but his eyes were alert, scanning everything. When their gazes met, a strange feeling rushed through her—fear mixed with something she didn’t recognize.
He wasn’t there to hurt her.
He was there to protect her.
Elara turned away quickly, heart racing. Why would someone like him care what happened to her?
All through her classes, she couldn’t focus. Every time she heard footsteps behind her, her muscles tightened. Every whisper in the hallway made her wonder if someone knew what she had seen.
At lunch, she sat alone, barely touching her food.
When she returned to her locker, something slipped out and fell to the floor.
A folded piece of paper.
Her hands shook as she picked it up and opened it.
You’re not safe.
They know you were there.
Stay close to me.
There was no name.
But she didn’t need one.
Her heart pounded as she read the words again. He could have ignored her. He could have let whatever danger was coming reach her. Instead, he had chosen to warn her.
Across the hallway, she felt eyes on her. When she looked up, she saw Lucian through the glass doors. He gave her a slight nod before turning away, disappearing into the crowd outside.
Elara pressed the note against her chest.
Her life was no longer simple.
She was no longer just a wealthy high school girl with big dreams and quiet fears.
She was a witness.
And somewhere in Silvercrest, shadows were moving because of what she knew.
