SHADOW IN MOTION
Lucian’s body tensed as the footsteps outside the library grew louder.
Elara stood frozen behind him, her heart pounding so hard she was sure the sound would give them away. The quiet building suddenly felt small and fragile, like it could collapse at any moment.
“Stay here,” Lucian whispered.
Before she could protest, he moved toward the door, his steps silent. Elara watched as he carefully peeked through a cracked window.
Two men stood across the street. They didn’t look like ordinary passersby. Their eyes scanned the area too carefully, their movements too controlled.
“They’re looking for you,” Lucian murmured.
Fear curled in Elara’s chest. “How do you know?”
“Because they work for the people who want to erase what you saw.”
The door creaked slightly as Lucian closed it. “We need to leave. Now.”
“But what if they see us?” Elara whispered.
“They won’t—if we’re careful.”
He led her through a side hallway that smelled of dust and old pages. A narrow door at the back of the building opened into an alley.
The rain had started again, soaking the pavement in silver light.
Lucian stepped out first, scanning both directions before motioning for her to follow.
As Elara stepped into the rain, a voice cut through the night.
“There.”
Lucian pulled her behind him instantly.
The two men had spotted them.
“Run,” Lucian said.
They sprinted down the alley, Elara’s shoes slipping on the wet ground. Her lungs burned, but she didn’t stop. She trusted Lucian completely in that moment.
A car engine roared to life behind them.
“They’re following us,” she gasped.
Lucian grabbed her hand and pulled her around a corner, ducking behind a row of dumpsters. They crouched there, barely breathing.
The car passed, headlights slicing through the rain.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Elara finally looked up at him. “You risked everything for me.”
Lucian met her gaze. “I won’t let them hurt you.”
Something unspoken passed between them — something deeper than fear.
The danger wasn’t gone.
But now, they were facing it together.
