The chirping of birds is what woke Sam up. The gated community where she had lived had chopped down all the trees due to the dirt the leaves created. Slowly the memories from the previous day came rolling. The wolves, the two men, and the child turned wolf.
Panic set in. This wasn’t a cult as she had previously imagined rather it was worse, far worse. She had stumbled upon a magical pack in the woods.
This was all her dads fault. Never in the tropics of Durban would werewolves haunt her. Surveying the room, she gathered that she was alone and there were no cameras. for a beat she contemplated drinking the water on her bedside table, in the end she devoured it uncaring to the potential poison it might harbour.
The room was quant with creams and frills obviously decorated with love. Sam wondered if Jaxon had been the one to decorate this place, if it was his home. Maybe it belonged to the brooding man who accompanied him.
Instead of staying in bed Sam apprehensively tried the door.
Surprisingly the door opened.
Not a moment was spared, as she bolted down the hallway. The house was silent, with barely much movement. This worked in Sam’s favour- or so she thought.
The movement in the house let Nicholas know to put his morning paper down, and Jaxon to move to the dining room. The one cup of tea would have to make do.
Her appearance was expected, with both men sitting watching. For her however it made her miss a few steps stumbling. They both knew that she had seen the child.
“Were not going to hurt you Sam.” Jaxon spoke taking a sip of his lavender tea.
“Please sit, we are sure you have a lot of questions.” He smiled looking expectantly at her to take the seat next to him.
Hesitantly Sam moved to sit across the pair arms folded. The silence of the house made her ever more nervous, the chatter and liveliness from yesterday was nowhere to be seen.
“What is this place?”
“What are you?”
“What are you going to do to me?”
“Can I go home? Are you going to kill me?”
Sam rattled off making the pair look at each other. As the Alpha it would ordinarily be Nicholas place in leading the conversation however since Sam already knew Jaxon they had agreed last night that he would be the one to lead the conversation.
“You are currently at our home in the Woodland pack north of Hollis. We found you on pack lands last night passed out and brought you here.” Sam listened eyes wide unbelieving. For a moment she was tempted to interrupt but thought against it.
When Jaxon noticed that she would not be questioning anything he continued, “As you might have deduced from last night we are wolf shifters or know to the human world as werewolves.”
Still Sam sat staring, this time her heart was beating erratic and mind racing. The only werewolf content she had ever consumed had been Twilight in her tween years and she had barely cared about the werewolves caring far too much on the vampires- specifically Alice.
“-we aren’t going to hurt you, Sam. We would never. We just need your assurance that you will keep this between us and well take you home.”
“Great. I promise on my grandmother’s life that I will not tell a soul.” She nodded at both men with a clipped smile.
“Take me home please.” She stood, placing the chair neatly back in its spot.
Nicholas opened his mouth wanting to speak, drawing a blank he closed it. He looked at her then almost like making up his mind stood up as well.
“I’m grabbing my keys.” He muttered already on the way to the kitchen.
Jaxon followed in suit of Nicholas chugging his tea moving to stand next to Sam. The silence between them was so uncomfortable it was almost palatable. There was so much he wanted to ask.
Last night they had planned how this interaction would go and this was not how they has expected. They had hoped on her showing more interest in them, their pack. Jaxon wondered if she felt the mate bond at all. They barely knew anything on how it affected humans.
Did she feel nothing?
Would she continue to feel nothing?
When Nicholas returned he had two apples in hand, one red and one green. He walked to the front door opening it for both his mates. Jaxon took the lead and left first- Nicholas handing him the green and her the red.
There was no need for Nicholas to lock up thus he followed closely behind his mates. As she walked her hips moved gently from side to side. Nicholas’s eyes followed closely almost hypnotised.
When they got to the car, Nicholas headed straight for the driver’s seat. The other two however hovered. Surprisingly it was Sam who moved first walking towards the passenger’s seat. Jaxon was faster opening the door for her.
“Ladies first.” He smiled showing off his dimples. Sam returned the smile, swopping their apples and taking a bite out of his.
The drive was calm with the radio playing silently in the background. Nicholas had turned on the heat as the morning chill was making Sam hug herself.
Sam’s gaze was stuck to the changing landscapes. The homes were nestled in the forest giving a storybook view, it was still early in the morning and the homes were covered in mist. It was beautiful in comparison to the homes in the town which were already quaint.
At some point in the drive she even saw a bunny running into the trees. This place was beautiful, it made sense for the mythical creatures living in it. The thought made Sam turn to look at Nicholas. The man had multiple beauty marks. There was two right under his eye, another on his cheek. One on the tip of his nose and one more on his bottom lip. Sam wondered if he had more hidden by the hair on his forehead.
There was a light stubble on his pale skin. Him glancing at her side, made her look up at the roof of the car. “How old are you? I don’t remember you in the same high school as Jaxon and I?” she questioned looking back at him.
The question took Nicholas by surprise, he didn’t think she would engage any further with them.
“We are the same age; I was just training to be Alpha so I was home schooled.” She nodded along as if taking the information in. After a beat she turned to look at him once more.
“Alpha? Andrew Tate alpha male loser stuff or …” she asked fully turned to him.
The comment got a muffled laugh from Jaxon at the back. Nicholas gave him a look in the rear view mirror before answering.
“Nothing to do with him. It just means I have leadership position in the pack, ensuring everyone livelihood and safety.”
“That’s a lot for a twenty-three-year-old. Is this why you didn’t go to college Jaxon, are you also an Alpha?” She questioned looking back at him.
Jaxon smiled shaking his head,” No, it’s not. I’m not an alpha but rather his Beta, meaning second in command. I ensure he does a good job taking care of the pack.”
“So you work for him?” She quips back hiding a smile.
“Basically.” Nicholas inputs.
Sam nods along thinking of other questions she could ask.
When they reach the town highway her brows rise. “My car is back there, take me to the trail, I can drive myself back.” She points to the exit they pass.
“You have fainted twice since we have met you. We couldn’t in good faith let you drive.” Nicholas spoke driving straight ahead no sign of turning.
“We will have someone bring it to you, no worries.” Jaxon added softer with a smile.
Instead of fighting Sam just nodded, closing her eyes as they drove on. “I live at Clearfield’s.” she muttered to no one in particular. She doubted they needed the address as it was a popular gated community in the town.
The next twenty minutes were spent in absolute silence as they drove through the town, Sam thinking next to them. The town was starting to wake up with the garbage truck collecting trash along the road. The tiny cafes were opening and children were walking to one of three elementary schools in this entire town.
“Vampires.” Sam gasped looking at Nicholas.
“Are vampires real?” She asked eyes wide.
