Chapter 4 Her Reputation Ruined

830 Words
Mabel felt the world spinning around her. Was this recorded secretly? Who played it here?! A huge uproar erupted among the guests. Some displayed expressions of disgust, looking down their noses at her. "The Lambert family heiress? What a disgrace!" "How could a woman like this be worthy of Yusuf?" a middle-aged man commented scornfully, his voice dripping with disdain. Mabel's father pointed at her on the stage and bellowed, "Shameless creature! From today, you are no longer a part of this family, nor my daughter!" After his declaration, he stormed off. Mabel's mother tried to stop him but was swallowed up by the crowd. Lauren, somehow at the forefront of the crowd, shrieked sarcastically, "I can't believe it, Mabel, that you could be such a person!" She pointed at the paused screen and shouted, "Look at the clock at the hotel entrance! The date was just yesterday! The eve of her wedding! My God, how could there be such a slutty woman in the world! As your cousin, I'm ashamed for you!" "How can she still stand there?" another young woman whispered to her friend, both gloating. In an instant, Mabel turned deathly pale, and Yusuf turned livid, his eyes flickering with fury. "Yusuf, listen to me, this is a misunderstanding!" Mabel's complexion was pale and strained as she tried to remain calm. She knew she had to be strong at this moment. Yusuf sneered, his gaze icy. "The facts are right before us. How would you explain it?" Mabel was not deterred by his demeanor, continuing, "This is a plot! Someone wants to ruin our wedding and destroy everything between us!" "Enough!" Yusuf's voice, amplified by the microphone, echoed throughout the hall like a slap across Mabel's face. "Your actions have shamed your family, but I will not let my family suffer the same disgrace." Yusuf looked at her sternly, his words cutting. "You not only deceived me but everyone here. I will not marry a w***e. The wedding is off!" With that, he ripped off the boutonnière from his chest and threw it at Mabel's feet before leaving without looking back. In the hall, the jeers and sneers from the guests grew louder, and Mabel felt as if she were standing on a desolate island, utterly alone. "No! It's not like that!" she protested weakly, her vision blurred by tears. But no one listened to her. Surrounded by laughter and accusations, she could no longer hold herself up. As the room spun around her, Mabel's legs gave way, and she fainted. However, just before she lost consciousness, a blurry figure rushed towards her. Soon, she was sent to the hospital. "No, no... Yusuf..." Mabel seemed trapped in an inescapable nightmare. She was breathing rapidly, her eyelids fluttering, her forehead slick with sweat. Cyrus, sitting by the bed, instinctively reached to wipe her forehead but paused when another man's name fell from her lips. He scoffed at himself, realizing there was no need to worry about her condition enough to follow her to the wedding. Even unconscious, she was still obsessed with the man who had abandoned her. Cyrus's face darkened, his voice low and gruff. "Are you going to sleep forever?" The familiar yet strange voice jolted Mabel awake. She opened her eyes abruptly. The air was thick with the scent of disinfectant. Realizing she was in a hospital bed, Mabel saw the man from last night—the one in the silver suit—beside her. She struggled to sit up, her eyes narrowing defensively. "Who are you? What do you want?!" "What do I want?" Cyrus didn't directly answer her question. Instead, he turned on the TV in the room. "I'm just the guy who brought the stray cat to the hospital, nearly getting scratched for my troubles." His voice was cold and detached. "You should be grateful, Ms. Mabel Lambert. While your reputation was being dragged through the mud, I didn't abandon you." Mabel followed his gaze to the TV, which was broadcasting a celebrity news segment. Reporters swarmed outside the Jefferson Group, interviewing Yusuf. With a sneer, Yusuf spoke to the camera, "Mabel's actions and lies are nauseating. Thank God I canceled the wedding in time; it was the best decision I've made!" "She slept with a stranger the night before her wedding. The Lambert family can't tolerate such shameless behavior, either! She has been kicked out of the family!" Lauren added maliciously from the side. Mabel's memories flooded back. Yusuf rushed to distance himself from her at the wedding, and the wedding was canceled, turning her into a laughingstock in all of Havenbrook. And when did Lauren become the spokesperson for the Lambert family? "Your family is quite interesting," Cyrus observed Mabel's stunned expression, his face showing a hint of sympathy but his tone remaining harsh. "As for who I am..." He stood up, pressing her back onto the bed with a smirk. "Ms. Lambert, don't you remember what happened that night?"
