Chapter 5 Cyrus' Proposal

993 Words
"Did you orchestrate all this? What are you after?" Mabel's agitation grew, but she was effectively pinned down, unable to move. Cyrus' eyes were filled with disdain. "I wouldn't stoop to such things. Besides, what motive could I possibly have? Who would have any purpose with a notorious w***e?" Mabel was stung by his words, glaring fiercely at Cyrus' face. "A notorious w***e is still better than a coward like you who hides his name and skulks in the shadows!" "Hmm..." Cyrus traced her flushed lips with his finger. "Ms. Lambert, you do have a sharp tongue." Mabel turned her head to avoid his touch, but he quickly grasped her chin, forcing her to look him in the eye. "I promise, even if you forget who you are, you won't forget my name." He leaned in closer, whispering his name into her ear. "Cyrus Quinn... wait, you're that Cyrus who turned LC Group into a Fortune 500 company in just five years?" Mabel looked at him, astonished. Cyrus straightened up, observing her reaction. "Ah, Ms. Lambert of Havenbrook really does know her elites!" His tone dripped with irony as he released her from his hold. "Now that you know who I am," Cyrus smiled slightly, adding, "you should understand the power my name carries. You're now the laughingstock of the city. Want to change that? I can help you, but the condition is you become my possession—marry me, how about it?" Recalling the intense scenes from that night, Cyrus swallowed as his gaze swept over Mabel's chest. "You!" Mabel's face flushed red in an instant. "Learn to please me, and I might be able to solve many of your problems..." Cyrus made a reprehensible proposal. Mabel thought this man was insane. She grabbed a water glass from the bedside and threw it at him. "Get out!" Cyrus dodged it easily, and just then, his phone rang. "Boss, someone's heading to the ward." "Got it," Cyrus replied briefly to his subordinate and put away the phone. "You know, with my status, I could toy with you by just lifting a finger. But that would be too boring for me." He stood up leisurely, leaving Mabel with one last comment. "I didn't expect to get such a show without even trying. What a surprise. I look forward to you changing your mind, Ms. Lambert." With that, he turned and left the ward gracefully. The door closed behind him, leaving Mabel alone in the room. The TV continued to broadcast, Yusuf and Lauren's voices reaching her ears, but Cyrus' words echoed in her mind. 'What did he mean—everything that happened at the wedding had nothing to do with him? Then why had this influential man suddenly taken an interest in me? Could we have had some past encounter?' "Mabel, who was that just now?" Mabel's mother, Diana, entered the ward just as Mabel was lost in thought. "Ah... someone who walked into the wrong room." She didn't want to delve deeper, brushing it off casually. "Ah, is that so..." Diana didn't press further, instead showing concern. "Mabel, you've been unconscious for a whole day. How are you feeling now?" "Mom, sorry to worry you, I'm okay." Mabel's voice was hoarse, her guilt making it tremble. Diana glanced at the TV and turned it off with the remote. "You need to rest properly. Don't worry. The doctor said you are all right. They'll just observe you a while longer, and you can leave the hospital tomorrow." She kissed her daughter's forehead, her voice soothing yet unable to hide her underlying concern. "There's another piece of news I must tell you so we can prepare," Diana said. "Your father, that bastard Edwin, just announced that he's cutting us off from the Lambert family completely and is reclaiming all your shares!" "What?!" Mabel was shocked. "Listen, darling, I'm not surprised at all. Edwin would do anything to protect his reputation," Diana said gracefully. Even her scorn was elegant. "You only have 10% of Lambert Group's shares left, and if Edwin wants them back, let him have them." Then she continued, looking at her daughter, "But your grandfather left you a wedding gift—if you find the right partner, you can claim another 30% of Lambert Group's shares!" "What?" Mabel was stunned. "Then why didn't Dad tell me about this before my wedding with Yusuf?" "That's what I've been worried about. After he divorced me, he didn't even want our daughter to have a penny from the family." Diana's smile was bitter. "I need to get your grandfather's will and the notarization documents. They must still be in the old mansion," she added. "Mom, that's too dangerous." Mabel immediately got off the bed. "I'm coming with you!" "No way. Edwin surely has a horde of reporters waiting to catch you and then propagate an image of you as a heartless and greedy daughter. I won't give him that satisfaction!" Diana pushed Mabel back onto the bed. "You haven't fully recovered yet. Be good and wait for me to come back tonight with good news!" After Diana left, Mabel lay on the hospital bed, her thoughts running wild, until she couldn't stay put anymore. "Damn it! I need to find my mom. Whether it's the wedding or the will, we need to clear things up!" She quickly got ready and called a taxi to the old mansion. But just a few minutes into the ride, they hit a severe traffic jam. "What's causing the hold-up?" Mabel murmured. "It's an accident, young lady!" the driver exclaimed, pounding the steering wheel. "Look there, they're carrying someone to the ambulance! So much blood... I don't think that one will make it." Mabel's heart inexplicably skipped a beat as she looked in the direction of the ambulance. Then she saw the familiar clothes and shoes on the stretcher—the ones her mother had worn when she left the ward.
