Chapter 11: Anger evoke

I woke up feeling unusually lively on a Saturday morning and I walked straight to the kitchen, where Bernard's mom was cooking.

She has maids in the house, but she prefers to cook for her family.

The moment she heard footsteps approaching her from behind, she immediately turned to check who it was and it was a surprise to her seeing me walking towards her in the kitchen.

She stood still looking at me with that same expression, as she abandoned what she was doing entirely, and immediately I was close enough to her, I broke the silence.

"Good morning ma'am!" Excitingly, I greeted her.

She was still in shock, as she couldn't process what's happening quickly then.

She only nodded her head to greet me back, while still staring at me with a curious expression.

I could read from her facial expression, that she was confused and also curious to know what I was coming towards her to do, as I have never come close to the kitchen since I have been in the house.

"I know I have been arrogant and stupid with my acts all this while, I don't know if it was what happened to my parents... but right now, I just want to apologize for all my bad manners all this while, please forgive me, ma'am!" Convincingly and honestly, I tendered my apology.

She was still not sure about what's going on and given the fact that she's not an easy person to walk to, she decided to probe further, by asking me some questions.

"What suddenly changed your mind and did I ever complain about any of your attitudes?" With a raised eyebrow, she challenged me.

"I'm sorry ma'am, I do know that I have not been acting right and if there is anything I should be doing, is to show gratitude... This family saved me and I'm also going to be a part of the family now. So I'm very sorry ma'am, forgive me!" I further made some apologetic statements and from the look of things, it seems she's enjoying what she's hearing.

At this point, she was already getting rid of the initial hard face and she wasn't completely into me, but I could tell that my words had penetrated her.

"Hmm... Okay, so what exactly do you want now?" She questioned.

"I have been lonely and I have always needed someone to talk to, since the death of my parents... Please just come and be the mother that I do not have anymore!" I pleaded with her, putting on a sorry face.

She hesitated a bit before she finally puts out a half-smile.

"Okay, that's if you promise to be a good girl!" She said, with a smile on her face.

"Yes, I will be a good girl... Thanks for accepting me!" I walked close to her and we both hugged each other.

'This is the first step in getting all that is mine back!' I thought to myself, as I kept on smiling.

I was with her in the kitchen, as we both prepared the meal for that morning.

It was a thing of shock when Bernard and Beta Gilbert walks onto the dinner table and saw both of us serving the meal.

From the look on Beta Gilbert's face, he was pleased to see the both of us getting along, but Bernard's facial expression shows shock and curiosity as to what on earth would have brought me and his mom together.

I ignored him and as we eat our meal, I and his parents were chatting and I'm very sure Bernard was not okay about what he's seeing.

I could feel like he had a lot on his mind and he would surely want to have a word with me after we finish eating.

Just as I predicted, immediately we were done eating and I was about to head to my room... Bernard called me and asked if we could have a word in the garden.

We walked to the garden and as soon we were out of his parent's sight, Bernard dragged my hand and with a stern look into my eyes, he questioned me angrily.

"What exactly are you trying to do?" He asked.

I decided to play dummy and act like I don't understand what he's talking about.

"What are you talking about and please stop hurting my hand!" I questioned him, as I dragged my hand out of his.

"You think you are smart right, I will only warn you to stop all this good girl act with my parents and stay in your lane!" He warned as he spoke to me angrily.

"If anyone should stay in their lane, then it should be you... You said you don't have any feelings for me, so why are you hurt by my actions?" I laughed at him mischievously, as I questioned him.

The moment I made that last statement, Bernard was dumbfounded and he could not even say a word, as he watched me walk out on him.

Later that same day, I was alone in my room thinking about a lot of things, especially how I will lay my hands on all the important documents.

"Whatever I'm doing, I have to make sure I don't raise any suspicion" I mumbled to myself, while I was still thinking.

I was still in the room when I heard a knock on the door, and when the person came in, I was so shocked to see Beta Gilbert walking in.

I quickly jumped out of the bed to greet him, as I was filled with shock and curiosity.

Beta Gilbert is a man you can not possibly predict, as he's always putting on a smiling expression, even when things are not going his way.

"Good evening sir!" I greeted him, as I sounded nervous.

'What could he have come here to do?! A question quickly popped up in my mind.

"Hello, Maria. I come to have some discussions with you, hope you don't mind?" In a very calm and polite way, he asked.

"No sir, it's okay!" I answered calmly.

"Okay good. Since the death of your parent, I know things have not been easy for you and especially with my wife and son. How are you coping with everything?" In a sincere and concerned manner, he asked me.

I firstly took a deep breath and I have to be honest and at the same time, be careful with anything I will be saying, so I kept calm a bit before sayings words.

"I will say it has not been easy at all sir and everything is happening very fast, that processing it in my head becomes too impossible, but thank God I have a good family like yours around me to fall back to" I answered honestly, but had to be careful with my answers.

"Okay, I want to know... How do you feel or see us now, that everything your parents worked for has been given to Bernard?" With a stern look into my eyes, he questioned.

As soon as he asked that question, my heart skipped like a thousand times and I was firstly short of words.

I was angry about everything connected to what he just asked, but I had to maintain calmness.

"Sincerely sir, I felt cheated and I don't understand why it has to be like that... But now, I have just decided to take things the way it is, after all, I will be getting married to Bernard!" I tried to be calm, as I answered and finally let out a half-smile.

"I am very happy for your honesty and I must commend you for trying to contain all these without throwing abusive words towards our family... I am very grateful.

" I wish I had known that he was planning to do something of this nature and magnitude, I would have talked him out of it... I would have told Bernard to even return everything to you but on second thought. I realized that we have to respect your parent's decision and they must have a genuine reason for doing what they did, so I will just plead with you to keep on with the good act till everything start working better!" With a sincere expression, Beta Gilbert made his thoughts known to me.

I didn't say a word, as I nodded my head and smiled back to him in agreement with all that he had said.

"I must say that I'm happy with the way I saw you and my wife talking in a more friendly manner... please keep it up!" With a delightful expression, he said; as he stood up and walked out of the room.

I was also smiling when he said those words and immediately he walked out, my facial expression changed, as the smiles vanished.

'I have to act fast now... Now they believe I'm with them, it's time to strike!' I thought to myself, as I let out a mischievous smile...
