CHAPTER 2

SCARLET'S POV: I finished packing a few of my things—my clothes, my laptop, and the books I use for studying—then came downstairs dragging my black suitcase. I had changed into a long red dress. My parents stood in the living room waiting for me with Aiden. “I’m ready,” I said to them through clenched teeth. My father replied, “That’s fine, Scarlet. Do not forget to be nice to Jack when you get to his mansion.” I only hummed in response. Aiden came to take my suitcase. “Shall we go now?” “Alright,” I said, and followed him out of the house. Aiden was a very tall man. I used to admire him when he came to pick up my sister, but he never asked me out, so I did not bother to consider him further. As I watched Aiden place my suitcase in the trunk of his car, he said, “You do not have to be afraid of my boss. He is not as bad as you think.” “That does not matter, Mr. Williams. Despite Jack’s condition, he is still a billionaire and runs his business, from what I’ve heard,” I said to Aiden, standing beside his car. “You can call me Aiden. You do not have to address me as Mr. Williams.” “Fine. Should I take my own car? I have classes to attend on Monday, and I work at the neurological hospital,” I told Aiden as we stood in the driveway of my father’s enormous mansion. “That is fine. But you will not need it much. My boss has several cars you can use, now that you are his wife and he is your husband,” Aiden said. “Husband? We are not yet married. That was only an agreement between my father and his. I have not decided on the marriage until I see your boss and assess the extent of his condition,” I told Aiden. He nodded. “That is fine. Get into the car. Let’s go,” he said. I walked back to my own red car—a Toyota Corolla, and got in. “Scarlet! Why are you taking your car? Why not go with Aiden? It is getting late, and you need to arrive on time,” my father said. He stood at the front entrance of the house, then walked to the garage to meet me. “No, Dad. I need my car because I do not have permission to drive Mr. Tristano’s cars yet. We are not legally married, and I cannot afford any inconvenience with my studies,” I said through clenched teeth. My father sighed. “That is fine. Be nice to Jack when you get there, and tell him I send my greetings. One last thing: do not tell him we forced you, or that you came because of his money,” Dad said, speaking in a low voice as he leaned in my car. “Fine. Tell the security guard to open the gate,” I said. Dad smiled and went to order the gatekeeper. I perched on the driver's, wondering how Jack would react upon seeing me in his mansion. I knew how much he had loved my younger sister. They were so in love. I did advise Annabelle to have faith and believe Jack would recover soon, but she refused to listen. She said she did not want a crippled man as her husband. Before I knew it, the news blogs reported that model Annabelle Jefferson had moved on and was spotted in a new relationship with Mr. Henry Kingston, the CEO of H.K. Groups. My fists clenched around the steering wheel. I could not believe Annabelle had moved on so easily. She dated Jack for four years, and now she was already with Jack’s best friend. I knew Jack would be hurt. I did not know how he would behave when he saw me. Sighing, I kept my gaze focused on the road as I drove behind Aiden’s car. I already knew the way to Jack’s mansion, so I concentrated and continued driving. Soon, we arrived. I drove through the magnificent gate as the security guard opened it, letting us in under Aiden’s instruction. I noticed there were bodyguards with Aiden whom I had not seen earlier. I got out of my red car, locked it, and turned to look at Aiden. “Shall we go in?” Aiden asked, holding my suitcase. I nodded. “Fine.” I silently followed Aiden into the living room of the magnificent home. It was a white-painted duplex, and even at night, its beauty was top-notch. If Annabelle had married Jack, this could have been her home—but CEO Henry was not poor, either. We entered the living room, and a middle-aged woman welcomed us. “Welcome, Aiden,” she greeted him. Aiden smiled and said, “Thank you, Helen. This is Scarlet Jefferson, Mr. Jack’s new wife.” “Oh, welcome, madam. I am Helen Paul.” “It is nice to meet you, Helen,” I told her. She nodded. “You are welcome.” “Excuse us, Helen. Let me take Scarlet to see my boss first, before you show her to the guest room,” Aiden said. Helen smiled. “Alright. I will be waiting. I am sure Mr. Tristano will accept her.” Helen's comment raised my brows. I wondered how many women Jack had rejected. I did not say anything, but I felt nervous about how he would react. “I am sure my boss will not reject Scarlet. Come with me,” Aiden said, and led me toward the stairs. We went upstairs. I was nervous, wondering where Aiden was taking me. “You do not have to be nervous. My boss does not bite,” Aiden added. That made me feel a little relieved. “Alright,” I replied, and followed him to the top floor. We walked to a door, and he said, “Give me a moment. I will be back.” I stood on the balcony waiting for Aiden to return. My palms were sweating. Then my phone rang in my handbag. I reached for it and saw that Annabelle was calling. I hesitated before answering her call.
