CHAPTER FOUR: UNLIKELY ALLIANCE

Emma glanced at him, her expression shifting from disbelief to curiosity. She wasn’t sure what to make of him, this stranger who had just offered help when she hadn’t even known how to help herself. The idea of trusting someone like Brad, a man she presumed to be from a completely different world than hers, was terrifying. But something about him, the way he wasn’t pressing her to spill her entire story, made her feel like he genuinely understood the weight of her situation. "I don’t know what you mean," she said softly, still skeptical. Brad shifted uncomfortably in his seat, feeling the enormity of the situation starting to settle on his shoulders. He wasn’t sure how to explain it. He had just walked into this bar looking for an escape from his own predicament and somehow ended up here, sitting beside a woman who needed help. He could barely even help himself. "I…" He hesitated, unsure if revealing his true predicament would make things more complicated. But then, he figured it was only fair that she knew the truth. After all, it was the only way she might consider his offer seriously. "Look, the truth is, I’m not here out of charity," Brad confessed. "I’m in a… tough spot too. My father just passed away, and he left me with an ultimatum that feels impossible to meet. If I don’t get married within three months, I’ll lose everything, the family legacy, the fortune, everything he worked for." Emma raised an eyebrow. "That’s a lot of pressure," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Yeah. But here’s the thing," Brad continued. "I’m not asking for your sympathy. I’m asking if you might help me. Maybe we could help each other. You’ve got your own problems, I know that. Medical bills piling up, your dad’s health... It’s all a mess. But maybe, just maybe, we could find a way out of this mess together." Emma blinked, confused and wary. "What exactly are you proposing?" Brad ran a hand through his hair, trying to put the strange thought into words. "Maybe we could make a deal. We get married. On paper, of course. A marriage of convenience. You help me meet the terms of my father’s will, and I help you with your father’s bills. I can take care of that, and you can focus on him, not worry about the financial burden." The words hung between them, an offer that sounded insane when he heard it out loud. But somehow, it also felt like a lifeline. It was risky. It was complicated. But the alternative, facing the wrath of his father’s conditions, was even worse. Emma stared at him for what felt like an eternity, her mind racing. "I don’t know…" she began, her voice trembling slightly. "This sounds like a bad idea. A dangerous one. We don’t even know each other. How could something like that work? I can’t just throw my life away like that, even if it sounds like it could solve all my problems." Brad nodded. He understood her hesitation. He wasn’t asking her to make an easy decision. But he couldn’t help the sense of urgency that gripped him, the need to find some solution before his three months ran out. "I know it’s a lot to ask," he said quietly. "But sometimes, life forces us into situations we never expected. I never thought I’d be here, talking to you like this. But I’m desperate. And it sounds like you are too." Emma took a deep breath, struggling to calm the storm inside her. She didn’t know if she could trust this man. The idea of marrying someone she barely knew, for the sake of both their personal gain, felt wrong. But then again, the bills were piling up, her father’s health was deteriorating, and the pressure was suffocating. Could she really afford to say no? Her gaze met his, and in that moment, something shifted. There was no grand gesture, no promises of love or happily ever after. There was just a mutual recognition of desperation. Of two people who had reached the end of their ropes. "What would the terms be?" she asked, the words escaping her before she had time to rethink them. Brad exhaled, relieved that she was at least considering it. "We’d get married, keep things simple. You wouldn’t have to do anything you’re not comfortable with. No one needs to know it’s not a real marriage. But I’d take care of everything for you—the bills, your father’s treatment, whatever you need. I’ll make sure you’re taken care of." Emma sat in stunned silence, weighing his words. It wasn’t an easy decision, but part of her felt like it might be the only way out. "I’ll need some time to think about it," she said finally, her voice firm. Brad nodded. "Take all the time you need. But just know, I’m not offering this as some kind of charity. It’s a business arrangement. I’m offering you something you might not be able to get anywhere else." The words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken meaning. Brad didn’t know what would happen next, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that this strange encounter might change everything. As Emma stood to leave, she gave him one last, long look. There was uncertainty in her eyes, but there was also something else, perhaps the faintest spark of hope. "I’ll think about it," she said, her voice softer than before. Brad watched her walk out of the bar, feeling the weight of the decision pressing on him once again. He had just thrown his fate and hers into the unknown.
