The room suddenly turned cold as if the AC had gone into overload. Blossom's hand left mine and she walked over to Elijah trying to smooth things over.
"Elijah, it's not what it seems like." Blossom said as she stretched out her hand but Elijah ignored her, walking straight to me.
Instead of being intimidated by him, I held his gaze.
"I asked you a question. What are you doing with my fiancee?" Elijah asked.
"What do you think?" I asked, trying to provoke him.
He took the bait.
Reaching out, he grabbed my shirt pulling me towards him. His fist tightened against my hospital shirt, veins popping out of his neck like he was a few seconds away from throwing a punch at me.
Blossom rushed forward immediately.
“Elijah, stop!” she cried, trying to pull his arm back. “He’s injured!”
“And I don't care,” Elijah said coldly, never taking his eyes off me. “What I want is to know the sudden interest he has in you. Was sending my mother to jail not enough for you?"
I smirked despite the pain burning through my chest.
“Your mother was having an affair with Kelvin. She betrayed our family and got what she deserved." I said, gripping the hard he used to hold me. "Do you know what they called people like that? W*ores,"
Elijah's jaw clenched. "You bastard!"
His fist crashed into my face with enough force to turn my head sideways.
Pain burst across my jaw. My body stumbled back, hitting the edge of the bed before I caught myself. The sharp wound in my chest flared so badly my vision blurred for a second.
“Louis!” Blossom screamed.
She rushed toward me, but Elijah caught her wrist before she could reach me.
“Stay back,” he snapped at her.
Blossom yanked her hand free immediately.
“Have you lost your mind?” she shouted. “He’s injured!"
Elijah laughed bitterly, though there was no humor in it.
“Injured?” he said. “He has ruined my family, Blossom. One punch is mercy.”
I slowly straightened, wiping the blood from the corner of my mouth with my thumb.
“That all you’ve got?” I asked.
His eyes darkened.
I knew exactly where to hit him.
“You should be thanking me,” I continued. “If I had not exposed your mother, she would still be whoring around the entire city. Maybe you should have a paternity test done. You know....given the way your mother was."
"What did you say?" Elijah asked, ready to hit me again.
“Elijah, don’t listen to him!” Blossom cried.
Too late.
Elijah charged at me again. This time he grabbed my throat and slammed me hard against the wall. The machines beside the bed rattled violently. A stabbing pain shot through my back and chest.
Still, I smiled.
That only made him angrier.
“You think everything is a game,” he said through clenched teeth. “You destroy people's lives and you sleep peacefully after.”
I grabbed his wrist, forcing air into my lungs.
“And you,” I rasped, “pretend to be noble while hiding your true colours. You're nothing but a two faced snake."
His grip tightened.
Blossom pushed at his shoulder with all her strength.
“Elijah! Let him go!”
He did not move.
Suddenly, her face changed. Fear turned into fury.
Without warning, she slapped him hard.
The sound echoed through the room.
Elijah’s hand loosened instantly. He stepped back slowly, staring at her like he did not know who she was anymore.
"Did you just slap me? For him?" Elijah asked, glaring at her.
"I told you it's a misunderstanding," Blossom fired back.
The room grew tense.
"Causing physical harm to my client, assault occasioning bodily harm, criminal intimidation, and destruction of hospital property are offences prosecutable under Sections 351, 355, and related provisions of the Criminal Code."
A sharp female voice sliced through the room before anyone could speak again.
All our heads turned toward the door.
Lyra stood there in a fitted navy suit, one hand holding a leather file, the other gripping her phone. Her heels clicked against the floor as she walked in calmly. Her face showed nothing, but her eyes were cold.
She looked at the damaged machine.
Then the blood on my mouth.
Then at Elijah.
Her expression hardened.
“Elijah Hart,” she said clearly. “Thank you for staying long enough to be identified. You will be receiving a subpoena from the court very soon."
Elijah glared at Lyra as if she was dirt. “Who the hell are you?”
“My name is Lyra Vale. Personal attorney to Louis Verran.”
She stepped beside me and carefully checked the side of my jaw.
“Did he hit you?” she asked.
“Twice. Once with his fist,” I said. “Then he slammed me against the wall.”
Blossom closed her eyes, clearly worried.
Lyra gave one short nod as if confirming something in her mind.
“Good. There are witnesses.”
Elijah scoffed. “You think a lawyer scares me?”
“No,” Lyra said. “But the consequences of a law suit should."
She opened her file and pulled out several papers.
“This room has security cameras in the hallway. Hospital staff heard shouting. The damaged equipment belongs to the hospital. And my client is already admitted with injuries.”
She looked him up and down.
“You attacked a hospitalized man. Even if my client doesn't, the hospital probably would. You might want to settle but considering what your beloved racer is doing in the next room, I'd say it's going to be hard."
Elijah gulped softly, his eyes darting to Blossom as if she could make everything disappear. For the first time since he entered, Elijah’s confidence slipped.
Blossom whispered. “I told you to stop.”
“Elijah,” Lyra continued, “you have two choices. Leave now, or remain here until the police arrive.”
His jaw tightened. “You’re bluffing.”
Lyra chuckled and raised her phone.
“I already called them.” she said, waving it.
The room fell silent.
I leaned against the wall, chest aching, but I still smiled. Having Lyra was indeed a good choice.
“This isn’t over," Elijah said, hatred in his eyes as he stared at me.
Then he turned, walking out of the room, his hand reaching out to adjust his tie. Blossom rushed after him, hushed voices echoing as they went into the hallway.
Once they were gone, I sighed heading back to my bed to lay down. Lyra followed me, her eyes full of judgement as she watched me settle down in bed.
"Really? Is this your plan to rescue Blossom from her impending fate of doom? By provoking your brother?" Lyra asked.
"I cannot allow them to get married, Lyra. You know that."
"I know that if you are not careful, you will only push Blossom away and your own life might in danger. You know who Elijah is." Lyra scolded in her usual lawyer voice.
I let out a slow breath and leaned back against the pillows.
“And you know who I am,” I replied.
Lyra folded her arms across her chest, clearly unimpressed.
“Yes,” she said. “A stubborn man with money, influence, and absolutely no patience.”
I smirked faintly. “That sounds accurate.”
“It sounds dangerous,” she corrected. “You are injured, Louis. Your chest stitches nearly reopened. You were strangled against a wall. Yet instead of recovering, you are provoking Elijah like this is some boardroom game.”
My smile faded.
“This is not a game.”
“Then act like it. Right now you have the chance to change Blossom's fate. To make sure she doesn't die. You need to be smart about it!" she said, her chest heaving as we stared at each other..
The room fell quiet for a moment.
The monitor beside me beeped steadily, filling the silence. We didn't say anything because we didn't need to. Somewhere in my heart, I knew she was right.
"Fine," I said sitting up. "Let's do things your way."
