Nia sat alone in her room, feeling overwhelmed by boredom and frustration. Evan’s penthouse was so vast that it only amplified her sense of emptiness. Sure, she had Netflix, but watching movies no longer satisfied her craving. She wanted something engaging and real. The temptation to reply to Ryan's messages had crossed her mind, but she resisted. She was determined to distance herself from him and the complicated emotions he stirred whenever he called her “Kotik.” Men couldn’t be trusted, not after witnessing her father abandon them. To her, they seemed good for only two things: s*x and money - not for genuine relationships.
Seeking an escape from her boredom, Nia decided to explore Evan's extravagant penthouse. The house was a sprawling maze of opulent corridors, adorned with breathtaking paintings and exquisite artworks. As she wandered through the luxurious passages, one particular painting caught her attention, and she couldn't resist gently touching it, completely mesmerized by its beauty.
Continuing her exploration, Nia opened every door she passed, taking a moment to inspect the interior of each room. As she wandered, she stumbled upon a locked room. It seemed odd to her since Evan wasn’t known for locking doors, even his own room was presently open. She had glimpsed the room open briefly when Evan emerged from it. This piqued her interest, fueling her determination to unveil its mysteries. Carefully, she picked the lock with a bobby pin, facing some resistance along the way. With persistence, the pin finally turned, and the door creaked open eerily.
Inside, the room was dimly lit, featuring a long desk covered in numerous papers. Moving closer to the desk, she peered at the papers, eager to see what was on it. As she saw their contents, her breath hitched in her throat, and her eyes widened in shock and horror. She picked up some of the papers, her hands trembling uncontrollably.
What she saw shattered her sense of security and sent chills down her spine. The papers were filled with pictures of herself - pictures she had never known existed. Images of her sleeping, bathing, dressing, and even intimate and private moments she had never consented to be captured on film. Her mind screamed in horror, realizing the depth of the violation she had unknowingly endured.
Fear gripped her heart like icy claws, and her body felt paralyzed with terror. The realization hit her like a tidal wave - Evan was not her best friend but a psychopath, a twisted individual who had invaded her privacy and sanity without remorse. The room seemed to close in around her, suffocating her with its dark secrets.
Nia stumbled backward, her eyes wide with shock and dread. She wanted to scream, to run, to erase the images burned into her mind, but fear held her captive. Her hands covered her mouth to stifle a sob, and her legs felt weak beneath her.
In that moment, she realized that she was not safe in this mansion, that the person she thought she knew so well was capable of such sickening deeds.
Tears streamed down her face as she turned to leave the room, desperate to escape the clutches of the twisted reality she had uncovered. Nia's heart pounded in her chest, and every shadow seemed to hold malevolent secrets. She knew she had to confront Evan, but fear paralyzed her, leaving her grappling with the haunting question - how could she have been so blind to the monster lurking behind her best friend's facade?
Just as she turned the corner, she heard Evan's voice echoing through the halls. "Nia, I'm home!" His words sent shivers down her spine. Her breath seized upon hearing his voice, and her mind raced as she processed the weight of the situation. What would happen if he saw her by the locked room? Panic set in, and she knew she had to act fast.
Nia's mind raced, and she felt like a trapped animal seeking an escape. She couldn't confront Evan yet, not with the images she had just witnessed fresh in her mind. Gathering all the courage she could muster, she made a split-second decision and hurriedly retreated to her room, closing the door silently behind her.
Her heart pounded in her chest as she tried to steady her breathing, praying that Evan wouldn't find any indication that she had been in his office. Nia understood the danger she was in; she knew she had to get out of the house as soon as possible.
Outside her room, she could hear Evan's footsteps getting closer. "Nia, are you there?" His voice sounded closer, and her heart skipped a beat.
Panicking, she looked around her room for a place to hide. Her eyes fell on the closet, and without hesitation, she hurried inside, pulling the door shut behind her. The small space felt suffocating, and she tried to stifle her breaths as she crouched in darkness.
Seconds later, she heard the sound of Evan banging on her bedroom door. “Nia are you alright?”
Nia closed her mouth shut as she sobbed further, praying that he didn’t enter the room.
Evan decided to leave her and went towards his home office but as he reached the door he noticed something different, the door wasn’t properly locked, and when he entered he saw several papers in places he knew he didn’t put them before. Evan felt pissed, why would Nia enter his room without his permission? He angrily stormed to her bedroom but sees her door is still locked.
“Nia, open the door!” He commanded, his tone impatient. Nia shook in her closet as he banged continuously on the door, she wondered if it’ll be better to escape.
Soon all she heard was silence and she took it as a sign to escape before he returned, Moving swiftly she left the closet and she unlocked her bedroom window and pushed it open. She took her duffel bag and threw in whatever she thought was important, phone, underwear, her purse and her certificates and cv. With a final look around, she climbed out of the window, lowering herself as quietly as possible. Once her feet touched the ground, she took off running into the darkness, away from the mansion, away from Evan, away from everything she once knew.
Fear gripped her as she ran but she continued to run towards the gate. She could feel her heart pounding in her ears, and the darkness of the surroundings seemed to close in around her.
“Where are you off to?" Evan’s angry voice came behind her, “why did you enter my office?” Evan asked running after her.
