CHAPTER 10

CHAPTER 10 HEAVEN "How is he?" Amy's voice shook as she rushed towards me and my eyes widened in surprise. Shouldn't she be on a vacation with her boyfriend or something? Mom said she was returning later tonight or tomorrow and we had only been in the hospital for a little less than thirty minutes and she showed up. Did she fly from somewhere or what? It didn't seem like their vacation was in New York and even if it was, I just found it so surprising that she would rush down here in a matter of minutes when she ought to be somewhere far away from home. They were best friends so it was understandable how concerned and worried she was. If something happens to Jenna or Raquel, I would certainly be the first one to fly there. "He is being attended to. I'm waiting for the doctor," I told her, and she ran her hand through her hair. She turned back to me a few seconds later and the concern on her face immediately morphed into disgust as she threw me a scowl. "This is all your fault!" She accused, pointing her index finger at me and I raised my brows. "What are you saying?" I wasn't in the mood to argue with her. Oliver was still there trying to fight for his life, but Amy never failed to find the fault in me every single time and it was clear she was going to pin this whole thing on me. Her lips pressed into a tight lip. "It's your fault that he's lying there. You shouldn't have been his date to the gala. You shouldn't have involved him in your mess with your ex, but no, you just had to be the center of attention just like you've always wanted to be. You must be feeling great to have two guys fighting over you, right?" She asked on top of her voice this time, not even minding that we were in the hospital. "I'm not happy that Oliver got hurt," I replied in a calm tone, hoping it was enough to calm her down but instead, it escalated the tension. "Oh, but you're happy you're making waves, right? You're happy to be the talk of the gala and the whole country. You're f*****g happy that your ex is trying to get back with you. The hell! You're happy that Oliver wants you and yet you keep on using him and pushing him away every time. You feel like a great deal, right?" She snapped, her eyes shooting sparks of fire and I stared at her in disbelief. I couldn't believe what she thought of me. She already had this make up idea or should I say misconception or hatred towards me so, she comes up with ridiculous ideas every single time just to make herself feel better, but I was going to shield her this time. Oliver was the priority so we wouldn't be caught arguing in the hospital reception. "Amy, let's not talk about this here. Believe what you want to believe but I only wish for Oliver's farewell," I told her , and she snapped her hand on her hand then she shot me one last look before walking away. She headed to the front desk to obviously ask about his condition, and his family arrived just at that time. Amy rushed towards them, definitely trying to poison me but thankfully, they didn't focus on that. "That Atlas will pay for this if anything happens to my son," his mother said sharply as she joined me. "I'll make sure he pays for everything," I said in an assuring tone, and she glanced at me. "Are you okay, though? You must have been scared," she said with concern evident in her tone, and I pressed my lips together. It was nice having someone ask about me. Earlier, I had been shaken to the core. I never expected something like that would happen at all. It was all so shocking and consuming. No matter the excuse Atlas tried to give, he hurt Oliver and he would pay for it. "I need that Atlas arrested this instant," I heard Oliver's father say on the phone before I could even open my mouth. "I want him behind bars," Oliver's mother added and the old man glanced at her before nodding. The doors opened that minute and the doctor walked out with two nurses behind him. Instantly, we all rushed towards him while I clutched my purse tightly, hoping it was great news. I don't think I would be able to forgive myself if something terrible happens to him. After all, he had been trying to look out for me earlier. If only Atlas hadn't followed me. If only he had remained with his love, Amanda. But this was like a wake up call for me. Atlas was dangerous and he deserved everything coming for him. For hurting me years ago and for what he did to Oliver, I would make sure he begs for mercy. "Doctor, how is he?" Amy and Oliver's mom asked in unison and the doctor's eyes went around. "He's fine. He's stable now. It's just a mild trauma. No internal bleeding," he revealed and a sigh escaped from my lips. Thank goodness it wasn't anything serious. "Thank you doctor, can we see him now?" His mom asked, and the doctor bobbed his head. "Yes, but there should be no rush or noise," he warned as he took a step away from the door, and his parents and Amy immediately rushed in. I decided to stay back to give them their moment. While waiting in the reception, my parents called to ask how he was doing and I shared the good news with them. "I'll go get him some fruits," I heard Amy say a few minutes later as she walked out of the room with Oliver's parents. "Thank you, Amy." Amy's lips curved into a smile. "Oliver is my best friend, anything for him. I'll stay with him tonight so you can go home," she said, taking a quick glance at me. "We'll leave him in your care then," his mother replied before turning to me. "Heaven, you should go see him. You shouldn't feel guilty," she said, flashing me a small smile and I forced a smile as I rose to my feet. "I'm sorry for what happened." "It's fine. We'll take our leave now," Oliver's dad said and I nodded. I watched them walk away while Amy glared at me before leaving with them. Once they were out of sight, I headed to Oliver's room with mixed feelings. I was torn between guilt and happiness, but one thing was certain, I wanted vengeance and I would get it. "I thought you were making Atlas pay for his sins," he joked as I approached his bed. Thankfully, he could still joke even with the bandage wrapped around his head. To think Atlas put him in this position with a punch says a lot about the pent up anger he had been holding in. It felt like it was premeditated and his plans just fell into place. "He's definitely going to pay for it. I'm sure of that," I replied as I sat by his bedside. The monitors beeped steadily, a soft reminder that he was definitely alive. That he was breathing fine. "I feel ashamed that a single punch from him sent me to the hospital. I should go take martial arts or something," he joked, and I gave a tight lipped smile. "You didn’t have to protect me like that," I whispered, guilt clinging to her like smoke. No matter how much I tried to avoid it, he was in that position because of me. Oliver’s lips curled faintly, a ghost of a smile. "I didn’t do it to protect you. I did it to free you." I blinked, furrowing my brows. "What do you mean?" "This is another charge in addition to his divorce fraud, right? Your revenge is falling into places, we are on the right track," he joked, but I could sense some hint in his tone. "But you didn't have to get involved." He placed his hand on mine. "Why not? He was practically trying to harass you earlier." I let out a sigh. "Still, you shouldn't have been a pawn in the game." His smile spread. "Well, I'll do anything to help with your agenda even if it means hurting myself," he said, his thumb caressing my palm. "You don't have to hurt yourself for me. I just feel so bad," I said, retrieving my palm slowly. "You shouldn't feel bad," he said, and our eyes met. "What if I say it was me?" I lifted my brows. "What do you mean?" “What if I say I let myself fall? You wanted to destroy him. I just gave you the fire," he said and I stared at him with wide eyes. It had better not be what he was trying to imply.
