Shocking Truth

1030 Words
Ava’s point of view Ethan paced across the corridor outside the ward. The doctors and nurses had been there since we arrived, and it had been almost an hour since they hadn't come out yet. Worry and dread were etched on Ethan's face. I couldn't bring myself to leave him here alone, especially after he saved my life twice. I sat on the bench quietly watching him pace. “What's wrong with your son?” My curiosity got the best of me, and I couldn't help asking. Judging from Ethan's expression, he knew what was wrong with him. Ethan cast me a glare, he sighed walking over to the bench and sat beside me. “He's suffering from lymphoblastic leukemia, but he was treated two years ago. I don't understand what's wrong with him now.” My eyes widened in shock at his words. I didn't think this was so serious. I mean, he was just a child, and he was suffering from such a condition. I couldn't even guess what the poor child must be going through. “I'm sorry. It must have been hard to deal with this on your own.” I was at a loss for words. I didn't even know what to say right now, especially when his mother had passed away. “And your wife?” I hesitated looking at his expression at the mention of his wife. I didn't want to open his wounded heart, but I couldn't help but be curious. “Your husband killed my wife?” Ethan's voice had no emotion in them, dripping with coldness. I blinked at his words, staring at his eyes wide open, trying to see a joke in his expression, but there was none; he was dead serious. “What do you mean my husband killed him?” I stammered, unable to form a full sentence, heaviness settling in my stomach. “Julian Styles hit my pregnant wife with his car and drove away without even helping, and because of his power, he got away with it.” His words echoed in my ears more than they should, like a horror music being played and I'm forced to listen to it. Julian was cruel to me, but I don't think his character is that bad, do I? “Avina Smith, your sister.” I froze on the bench, my eyes wide open. I tried to speak, but my words got trapped in my throat. I couldn't utter a word. Was Julian the one who killed Avina? My mom told me that my sister died during childbirth along with her child. She even told me that her husband committed suicide. At that time, I was out of the country for my studies, the exact time Julian's mother came with the marriage proposal for me and Julian all of a sudden, and my mom forced me to come back immediately. No! This must be a coincidence. This couldn't be right at all. This must be some kind of a joke, it is a lie. The world around me started spinning, and I couldn't understand anything at all. “I was poor at that time, and your mom chose a rich son-in-law over a poor one by getting you married to Julian in exchange for closing the murder case against Julian.” Ethan continues. I covered my ears with my hands trying to block his words from finding their way into my ears. This can't be right. My mom wouldn't do such a thing to me. She couldn't have gotten me married to my sister's murderer even if he did it by mistake. My mom couldn't have done that to me. It's a joke! Tears streamed down my face, its warmth trailing down my skin, and a sharp pain cut through my chest. I couldn't understand anything he just said right now. It felt like the cruelest joke of my life. This is why Julian hated me with everything in his blood. And yet I foolishly fell in love with him, the man who was the reason for my sister's death. I was pushed into a conspiracy without even realizing it. “You are lying!” I screamed, more tears welling up in my eyes. I refused to believe any of his words. I ran my hands through my hair. This is the reason why I've been feeling like I've seen him somewhere but didn't remember where I saw him . He's changed a bit because of money, that's why I couldn't recognize him. “I wish I were lying, but my child grew up without a mother because of Julian Styles. That's the only reason why I want to destroy him.” Ethan's jaws were clenched, his words sharp and stern. I covered my mouth with my hand, bursting into sobs. Everything was just too much to process. I wish I hadn't asked him anything about his wife. I wish I had stayed at the bar, maybe I wouldn't have been so shocked. All these years I've always wondered why Julian hated me, why he treated me the way he did, but never did in my wildest dreams have I thought of this, that he was the reason behind my sister's death. As much as I didn't want to believe Ethan, I had no choice. Avina was my elder sister, and she passed away five years ago, the second month when Julian and I got married, and she was pregnant. My mom told me her child died in her womb. I wasn't around. I was out of the country for my studies, and I didn't even have money to come back for her funeral. I never expected my mom to play such a sick game with me. I swear, had I known, I could have made sure he got punished for his mistakes. Before I could get a chance to utter a word, the ward door swung open, and the group of doctors stepped out of the ward. I didn't have the strength to get up from here. Ethan's words kept ringing in my ears like the most terrible music ever. I wish it were a lie!
